In celebration of a triple 5-star review over at Inked Rainbow Reads today, I’ll give another snippet from ’Til Death Do Us Part (now available at JMS Books).
From Chapter 1, the plane Henry is on has ditched in the ocean, is highly damaged, and sinking fast. This is told from Henry’s 1st-person POV:
“To my left, a screaming baby moved toward me from the waterlogged front section, mosh-pit style. As I stepped into place behind the woman currently exiting, the baby was thrust into my arms.
I was the end of the road for the baby. There was no one for me to pass it on to. Ironic, considering that one of the mental apologies I’d just made to Sam was regarding my resistance to his recent hints that he’d like to adopt kids.
I held the baby—I think he qualified as an older baby as opposed to a toddler, but it was probably a close call—against my chest, and he wrapped his arms tightly around my neck while he continued wailing in my ear. As we pushed out the exit door, water started to come over the lower lip.”

Nice snippet. Touching moment with the mental apology (but I’m betting he still wishes he had someone to pass the baby on to.)
Ha! For a short time, perhaps, but he’ll get attached to the precocious little guy soon enough. 🙂
I can’t help thinking, what a horrible situation for the poor parent to be in – entrusting their baby to a stranger to save its life. But very karmically fitting from our hero’s POV, of course! 😉
Indeed. That’s something I thought about a bit while writing it, but there was no way for the hero to have known their mindset, so I left it as something the reader could choose to speculate about on their own. Such a terrible choice to make… pass him forward for a small chance at life, but probably a bigger risk of dying anyway, but without the comfort of his parents arms. Not a position I’d ever want to be in. 🙁
This is all-around an awful time for them.

He is. It’s certainly more difficult for him to proceed, hampered by carrying the baby. 🙂
