From my short story, Okay, Then. For context, Henry and Sam have placed an order at the Mambo Juice in Honiara in the Solomon Islands. Sam has order a Vegemite and cheese toasted sandwich. Being from the US, this is not something they have experience eating in the past. This snippet is from Henry’s 1st-person POV, and Henry is the first speaker. “He” is Sam:
I stabbed a fork into my salad and watched with morbid curiosity as he bit into his sandwich. He grinned mischievously and took an extra-large bite.
“So?”
“It’s not bad.”
“That’s not exactly a glowing recommendation.”
He laughed. “That’s a figure of speech. I kinda like it.” He held it out to me, waving it slowly back and forth. “Try it.”

I had to look up vegemite, never having heard of it before. It’s supposed to be rich in umami. I don’t think I’ve ever sampled the umami taste.

I don’t know, I think I would have replied with “it’s edible”. LOL. Love the light hearted teasing, and I love that you are writing this for the Love is Proud anthology, a very generous and kind gesture for the Pulse victims and their families. For that I say thank you for the heart towards the tragedy.
