Today’s snippet is from To Love and To Cherish, a novel spinning off from ’Til Death Do Us Part.
Picking up where I left off last week. Nash is in the bathroom where he’d rushed to vomit due to the emotional strain at the thought of meeting Sam (his former fiancé) again. Here are eight lines (sorry…a couple are really short) told from Nash’s 3rd-person POV:
Nash loudly and erratically sniffed back the snot that had automatically formed during his emotional outburst, then allowed his body to slide down the wall until his ass landed on the floor. It wasn’t a hard landing, but enough to jar his arm again. “Ow, fuck, goddammit!”
He sensed someone standing in the doorway. That someone squatted next to him. Please don’t be Sam. Please don’t be Sam. Nash opened his eyes and had never been so happy to see his father’s frowning face.

Poor Nash, I just want to hug him.
He could use a good hug at this point.
Aw, poor Nash. Since his father is frowning, I can’t tell whether I’m relieved for Nash or worried for him.
No worries. Nash’s dad just has a frowny face. You can’t tell his mood based on it.
Like that he finds his dad a comfort. Maybe he tore a strip off Sam, too.
If he did, it was between books and isn’t referenced. I doubt it, though. There were extenuating circumstances to the breakup.
I love the “Please don’t be Sam. Please don’t be Sam.” (But I’m also evil enough to wish it had been Sam.)
LOL. I know what you mean. I thought about making it Sam, but in the end this worked better. 🙂

The build up of tension, followed by that sweet, bravely humorous last line…I’m with everyone else in wanting to hug Nash.
