I’ve joined the Rainbow Snippets group on Facebook. From their description: “Rainbow Snippets is a group for LGBTQ+ authors, readers, and bloggers to gather once a week to share six sentences from a work of fiction–a WIP or a finished work or even a 6-sentence book recommendation (no spoilers please!).” Pretty cool, eh? Don’t forget to “Like” my Facebook page and/or my Facebook profile while you’re over there checking out this fantastic group!
This week I’m going with 6 lines from another one of the short stories in my upcoming “boxed set” (Snapshots). This one’s from Cow Pie Bingo. The original version of this short story is the first thing I ever published.
In this snippet, Evan, who’s recently come to terms with accepting his sexuality (although he’s yet to act on it) has allowed himself to be talked into manning a kissing booth at a charity fundraiser:
He could do this. That was the mantra he kept repeating to himself. Maybe if he recited it enough, it would become true. After all, it was for only one hour.
The empty kissing booths loomed off to one side of the open meadow. He checked his watch.

Evan lets a co-worker talk him into working a kissing booth at a charity fair. Not quite sure what to expect, he certainly doesn’t count on meeting Gary, or kissing a man, considering his past. Kissing is what he ends up doing, though, along with playing cow pie bingo for a good cause. Will Gary end up being more than a six-ticket ride?

Cow Pie Bingo first made its appearance as a Torquere Sip on April 10, 2008, then reappeared as a self-published single on April 10, 2010. I took it (and the rest of my older works) down in the latter half of last year for a thorough overhaul.
Cow Pie Bingo will be included in a boxed set of all my short stories titled Snapshots, to be released at JMS Books, LLC on February 25. One story from the set, King Kong vs. The Skinny Pirate (featured in my rainbow snippets the past 2 weeks), will be released as a free single on February 18.
Not sure manning a kissing booth is ever a good idea, but it’ll certainly prove to be an interesting time.
No, probably not. Evan might get lucky, though. 😉
I love that the booth was “looming” off to the side. Really speaks to his mood.
Ha! Yeah, he’s not looking forward to it at all. 🙂
The way he describes the kissing booth really tells us how reluctant he is.
Thanks! Yes, he’s doing it as a favor to someone, definitely not looking forward to it. 🙂
Aww, cute scene! He’s so adorably shy at this point!
Hehehe…not so much with the wider context, but it would seem so from this short snip. 🙂
I am soooooo with him. I would not even remotely enjoy being any part of a kissing booth, LOL.
Me neither!
This sounds like fun 🙂
Thank you! 🙂
Love, love, LOVE this story!! <3
😀 Thank you <3
Gawd, I can’t imagine anything worse than manning a kissing booth! Bad enough to get customers – but how embarrassing if you didn’t get any! 😉
Looking forward to the box set!
Ha! True. That would be mortifying. 😀
Thank you!
IDK, maybe buying a kiss from a kissing booth would be worse? 🙂
But I agree, how mortifying if you manned it and not a single person bought a kiss from you. I’d definitely go home crying!! 🙂
I feel for him. I would not. Not even for charity!
I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t, either. 🙂
I love how the description really conveys his attitude about what he’s about to do.
Thanks! 🙂
Worse than customers, ones with bad breath. Urgh…*runs for the mouth wash*
That would be awful!
