I’ve joined the Rainbow Snippets group on Facebook. From their description: “Rainbow Snippets is a group for LGBTQ+ authors, readers, and bloggers to gather once a week to share six sentences from a work of fiction–a WIP or a finished work or even a 6-sentence book recommendation (no spoilers please!).” Pretty cool, eh? Don’t forget to “Like” my Facebook page and/or my Facebook profile while you’re over there checking out this fantastic group!
Today I’m giving another snippet from Okay, Then, a short story that’s in the timeline of the flashback scenes from ’Til Death Do Us Part, detailing Henry and Sam’s first date. This story is included in my collection, Snapshots.
The story is told from Henry’s 1st-person POV, and the first speaker (“he”) is Sam. For context, Henry and Sam are in the Solomon Islands on their first date. Sam has just tried Vegemite and coaxed Henry to do the same, prompting this discussion:
“I’m trying to expand my horizons. My New Year’s resolution was to try ten new foods this year. This makes five, so I guess I’m on target.”
“Any regrets among them?”
He winced. “Grasshoppers.”
“Gross. Apparently my resolution was to give up sex.”

Idk, Addison. Choosing between Vegemite or grasshoppers is like choosing between the plague or cholera. I’ll pass on both, thank you! 🙂
LOL. Can’t say either appeals to me, either. 😝
Hm… I wonder how long before Sam makes Henry break his apparent resolution?
Heheh…I don’t imagine Henry will put up much of a fight. 😉
Haven’t tried grasshoppers. I finally tried chocolate-covered ants, which were…meh. Not really gross, just not that good. I’ve never had Vegemite, but ages ago I was part of an online community where it was a running joke.
I giggled when they suddenly went from grasshoppers to discussing sex, probably because I have zero filter and would likely say something of that sort!
*shivers* I don’t think even adding a chocolate coating could make eating bugs doable for me. Ha…but I can’t blame Henry for wanting to shift the topic. 😉
*lol* Grasshoppers…can’t say i’ve ever thought about trying them. That would be a fun resolution, though! 🙂
Me neither. Yuck! Is it safe to assume you’re referring to Sam’s resolution when you say it’s fun, and not the apparently giving up sex one (Henry’s)? 😉
LOL! Great snippet. And I’ve always wondered what Vegemite tastes like. I wonder if it’s anything like Marmite?
Thanks! 🙂 I hadn’t heard of Marmite, but I found this interesting article comparing the two: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/03/05/vegemite-vs-marmite-taste_n_2807624.html
Oh my…
😉
Heh. I remember this bit. I quite like vegemite and marmite (find the latter a little bit sharper, but then, I grew up with vegemite). Haven’t been able to stomach either much since I was pregnant with my daughter, though. A damn shame as it’s a good source of vitamins.
I’ll pass on the grasshoppers, though.
I’ll pass on all of the above! 😝
LOL. That’s hilarious (I read it out to my husband because he wanted to know why I was laughing). I like Marmite with cheese on sandwiches. Vegemite doesn’t have quite so much bite, I don’t think. There was an advertising campaign in the UK for Marmite which utilised the fact people either love it or hate it. I do both – some days, the smell of it makes me want to puke. Other days, it’s exactly what I want to eat.
Apparently the only thing people can all agree is that both are an acquired taste! 😃
Eww, I think I’d regret trying grasshoppers too
Yep. I can’t think of any preparation that would alleviate the regret. 🙂
I actually like vegamite. This was a fun exchange.
Thank you! Yes, a lot of people must. I’ve never tried it. I don’t think I’ve ever seen it in a grocery store here.
