#AtoZChallenge – A is for Accident

A2Z-BADGE-300 [2017]

I’m participating in the A to Z blogger challenge this year. Since April also is the anniversary month for the release of my novel, ’Til Death Do Us Part, I thought I’d use that for the theme of my posts. For each letter I will come up with a word that is pertinent to the story, and post a short excerpt featuring it.

In general these excerpts will bounce around the timeline (after all, the story isn’t told in alphabetical order). No worries, I’ll give a little context leading into each scene so it won’t be necessary to read the others to enjoy the snippet-of-the-day.

AA is for Accident

One of the most important things to happen in my story ’Til Death Do Us Part is an accident. A plane crash. Everything that happens in the book, is because of that accident. Turns out it was  sabotage rather than a true “accident,” but I figure that’s close enough, because I can think of no better starting point for this series than a snippet from the plane crash scene. So, without further ado, here it is (told from Henry’s 1st-person POV):

A brief strangled sob-like noise escaped me before I was able to choke it back. My fists clenched, and I fought to suppress the nausea churning in my gut.

I did my best to remain calm, and by that I meant retain some semblance of dignity in my final moments of life by not totally freaking out. That was no easy feat when surrounded by hundreds of screaming people as we all accelerated toward certain death.

The “life flashing before your eyes” thing we’ve all heard about was real. At least it was for me, although “flashing before my tightly closed eyelids” was probably a more accurate description. Moments from throughout my life raced through my mind, but I forced my thoughts to focus on Sam. I wanted to be thinking of him as I died.

Henry and Sam Miller-Greene are living the dream. They love their careers — which afford each of them opportunities to travel to exotic locations — they love their home, Sam’s caring family, and each other. They disagree on the subject of adoption, but are fully committed to each other in marriage … ’Til Death Do Us Part.

The dream is shattered when Henry’s plane crashes, and he’s presumed dead. But four people — Henry, two other men, and a child — survive undetected on a remote, small, and insignificant island. Will Sam and Henry’s love be able to survive as well?

Henry fights to endure in harsh conditions, never knowing when disaster will strike. Sam struggles with his loss, but with help moves on with his life. Will Sam be able to put aside his new love when he reunites with Henry?

  1. Sounds like a really interesting story. I love romances that deal with situations where one partner is assumed dead, and the other moves on with their life. It must be such a difficult situation to be in.

I think your description of Henry’s final moments was wonderfully written. I especially liked how his final thoughts turned to Sam. <3

    1. Thank you! Yes, that theme really called to me for this one. I took a bit of a different approach. Usually, I think, such stories start at the point where the MC shows up alive. Instead, this book takes the reader through their separate journeys first, before dealing with the fallout of the big surprise, but gives flashback scenes at the beginning of the chapters where they’re separated to further get the reader invested in their relationship.

    1. Thanks. I feel a little like I cheated, since I’m not using fresh material. But still, it was a fun challenge to come up with something pertinent to each letter to highlight.

      1. No, I don’t think it’s cheating at all. I think it’s a great way to maybe attract new readers. At least I hope it is, because TDUUP deserves it 🙂
