Author Interview
I want to extend a huge thank you and welcome to V.L. Moon and J.T. Cheyanne for taking the time to drop by and answer a number of questions!
- Tell us a little about yourself and your writing goals.
We are J.T. and V.L. (a/k/a) Laz & Lachi. We have been married for just over three years now, and together for just almost seven. We met while writing in a role play group, and our love for the written word catapulted us into the realm of writing our own stories.
Although the distance between us can cause problems on the emotional front, the time difference also has its benefits. While one of us sleeps, the other writes. We have an around the clock presence on social media which helps in promoting our work.
We have documents and story outlines going back several years. We’re constantly adding to the TBW pile. However, our biggest priority is seeing The Crimson Nights Saga through to completion. Book Four, The Crimson Crown will be the last installment in the lives of Laz & Lachi. Many have asked if it will be an HEA…all we can say is…keep reading.
- Congratulations on your new release. Please tell us a little bit about it. What’s your favorite aspect or part of the story? Do you have a favorite character? Who/Why?
V.L.: Thank you for that. It really has been quite a journey. As you can tell by the size of the books. For me, (V.L) My first love will always be my snarky, potty mouthed Laziel. I swear some days I actually shit glitter. He does love to sparkle. But don’t be fooled by his witty campness. He’d tear you a new asshole if you dared threaten his vamp. Lachi IS, his one and only weakness. He is Laziel’s gift from the creator and as such, Laziel has loved him from the day he breathed life into Lachi’s soul.
Laziel is unique in the fact that he is both male and female. Not only in his androgynous looks but he can change form between either sex. He much prefers his male form, it wields the strength to deal with Lachi’s ferocious appetite for sex and his love for the male form. Laziel is far from perfect. He has issues and insecurities that at times lead to the odd mistake. But through it all, it is his love for Lachi, and their love for each other that will see them and their friends through the war that threatens to bring Rome and the preternatural world to its knees.
J.T.: Thank you! Crimson Storm is the third installment of the saga. It continues the lives of Malachi (Lachi) and Laz, Roman and Tobias, Vischeral and Copi and the host of other characters. We also meet new characters and learn how their lives intersect with old favorites. There is a lot of action in this book and plenty of snarky humor. For my part, I really enjoyed writing Rhys and Arial in this book. The exploration of their relationship and the development of Rhys’ character were great fun.
My favorite character would have to be my Lachi. Vampire king and total badass. Lachi owns a piece of my soul and has taken over the unused portion of my brain. Lol. He’s fierce in battle and totally and completely in love with Laziel though it took him most of book one and two to admit his feelings. He doesn’t apologize for who or what he is. He lives his life his way and rules his race with wisdom. He does have a short fuse and doesn’t tolerate idiots very well. He’s everything I would wish I could create in a character.
- Are you a planner or a pantser? How much do you know about your story before you start writing? How often does your plan change? Why does this work best for you?
V.L.: I would say that we are a little bit of both. We did map out a whole series of short stories on a sixteen-hour drive to D.C., but then with other stories, we write off the bat. It all depends on the voices and how loud they get.
J.T.: I tend to be a panster most of the time. V.L. prefers the planning and we spend a lot of fun times going back and forth about character development and possible storylines. We do have one problem though, and that’s remembering what we discussed. Thank God for notes!
- Do deadlines motivate you or block you? How do you deal with them?
As a rule, we don’t give each other deadlines. We self-publish and both of us have full-time jobs and families that at times take us away from our writing. So it works for us to self-publish. Unless of course, we are doing an event. It’s always good to have a new book out in time for an upcoming signing or meet and greet.
- Do you schedule a certain amount of time for writing each day/week, or do you just work it in when you can? Would you like to change this, or does your current method work well for you?
V.L.: Mostly, we work it in as and when we can. As much as we would both love to write full time, neither of us are in the position to do so. We both have other commitments to family and work.
J.T.: She’s right there. There is no set time and our current method does work well for us. However, if I could just win the lottery, I would love to be a full time writer.
- What was the most difficult part of writing this book? Why?
The most difficult part was remembering details and histories of the characters. Writing a series is so much harder than writing stand alone stories. You have to remember every minute detail. If you don’t, avid readers will catch your slip and question the change. Eye color, hair color, age are simple things that can be hard to remember in the middle of a writing session. Timelines have to match and come together at just the right time. It takes detailed reading and fantastic beta readers who’ve been with us from book one to make sure we get everything right.
- How do you develop a story idea? Do you always use the same method? Specifically, which do you develop first in your story building, the characters or the plot?
It depends on the story. Each and every one is different. Sometimes we have a voice that shows up in our heads. We have to wait and let that voice tell us who, what, when and where. Other times, we have an idea of what we want to write and the names and characters fall into place. The actual story building and plot expand and narrow as we brainstorm. The character can also drive the plot or story in a direction we didn’t expect.
- What are your favorite genres when it comes to your own pleasure reading? Do you prefer to read ebooks or print?
We both love to read gay romance and/or gay fiction. I will read just about anything as long as it’s not first person. I love a good sci-fi adventure whether it’s m/m, m/f or f/f. We both have a Kindle and V.L. prefers that format while I prefer a book in my hands.

Multi-genre romance and fiction writing duo V.L Moon and J.T Cheyanne span a continental divide to bring together their love, support, and admiration for the LGBT communities they belong to. With their ever growing families’ support, they make the most of what little time they have to write the love, angst, and turmoil that hopefully reflects the struggle that is, modern day life.
