I’ve joined the Rainbow Snippets group on Facebook. From their description: “Rainbow Snippets is a group for LGBTQ+ authors, readers, and bloggers to gather once a week to share six sentences from a work of fiction–a WIP or a finished work or even a 6-sentence book recommendation (no spoilers please!).” Pretty cool, eh? Don’t forget to “Like” my Facebook page and/or my Facebook profile while you’re over there checking out this fantastic group!
I was gonna be mean and leave things hanging after Mike dropped his “I’m gay,” bomb last week, but I decided to give at least one more from this thread after all.
Snipping from (unedited) Closets Are for Clothes featuring Mike & Wes. In this thread, Mike’s brother, Greg, has driven cross country for a surprise visit.
Told from Mike’s 1st-person POV.

This Week’s Snippet:
Greg blinked then snickered. “Well, duh.”
“Duh?” That was his reaction? It had taken me hours to get to sleep last night, worrying about Greg’s possible reaction, and all the time… “You knew?”
“Suspected. Up until last night anyway. I’m pretty sure I’ve never seen straight guys holding hands before, so that pretty much confirmed it.” He shook his head and looked at me with mock disapproval. “I’m a bit insulted you thought you needed to hide that from me.”
I let loose a shaky laugh and dropped back into my chair, afraid my wobbly knees would give out. “What…what made you suspect?”
Dream On – Book 1 – Closets Are for Clothes
43,199 words
Coming on February 24, 2018 to JMS Books, LLC

Mike’s life is carefully compartmentalized. He’s deep in the closet to his family back in Kansas, but lives life honestly and openly in Austin. He’s unnerved when Wes, his old university crush, turns up at his door in answer to a roommate advertisement, but quickly sees the potential…benefits of the arrangement. Wes has never doubted nor denied his sexuality. With the support of his family he’s an out and proud LGBT activist.
On the scale balancing his self-esteem on one side, and the love of his family on the other, Mike has to decide which weighs more. Is Mike being fair to his parents by not giving them the chance to know his real self? When the delicate balance of his life is disrupted, he decides he’s tired of living a lie. Will Wes understand his concerns, or will their fledgling relationship crumble under the strain of Mike’s uncertainty?
NOTE: Closets Are for Clothes is a from-the-ground-up comprehensively rewritten and reedited version of A Dream Come True. While the theme of the original story is the same, and many important scenes remain (albeit retold), much of the story’s background has changed. The earlier editions were told in alternating 3rd-person POV. Closets Are for Clothes is told entirely from Mike’s 1st-person POV.

If I didn’t like Greg already, I really like him now. 🙂
He’s going to become quite important in the story. 🙂
Such a good brother!
He is. Mike doesn’t yet know how lucky he is to have him. 🙂
“Well, duh.” LOVE it!! 🙂
snickers Ah, brothers…what can you do?
Ugh, I want to smack Greg. Wrong answer, dude. When your sibling comes out to you, “Duh” is soooo not the right response! LOL.
Oh dear. He’s trying to be a good brother. :-/
Aw. Yeah, it’s often hard for people to know how to react, especially if they suspected.
Too true. :-/
I really like Greg’s reaction
Thank you! <3
This is incredibly endearing. If you have to be let down, may it be in this manner. Love it!
Thank you! <3
What an anticlimactic reply! I’m in love with Greg…
Greg’s a great ally for Mike. The real question is, how will it go with Mike’s parents?
I really like Greg.
Me, too! 😁
Nice one, Greg. I love it. “Well, duh.”
LOL, maybe not the most tactful reply, but it worked out in the end. 🙂
