What I’m Reading

What I #amreading: Redesigning Max (Foothills Pride 2) by Pat Henshaw

My favorite lines this week:

✿✿ SUNDAY ✿✿

“Yeah, well,” Max said as if it took drawling those two words to prime the pump and get him to speak again.

✿✿ MONDAY ✿✿

“How you boys doing over here?” the drive-by waitress asked. She plopped our meals in front of us and then looked each of us in the face, smirked, shook her head, and muttered, “All righty, then. All good at this table.”

✿✿ TUESDAY ✿✿

“Pecan, please,” I answered. “A la mode.”

She frowned. “Nope. We don’t do that. Pecan doesn’t get ice cream.”

“Okay, cherry a la mode,” I answered, not taking my eyes off Max. What the hell? The chef was a Pie Nazi? Why were we bothering about something as mundane as pie?

✿✿ WEDNESDAY ✿✿

“We don’t serve no bigots in here. Do we, Bud?” she yelled over her shoulder.

A dumpling of a man, sweat pouring off him, came out of the back and rounded the sit-down counter. The men who’d gotten up and had been walking to back up Steve turned and sat back down. Deep freezers weren’t any colder than the chill coming from Lorraine’s eyes.

✿✿ THURSDAY ✿✿

I’d known something awful was going to happen the night before, and now here it was smelling and looking foul in front of me.

✿✿ FRIDAY ✿✿

“Why would he hate me so much?” Tears started falling down his cheeks. He didn’t wipe them away or acknowledge them in the least.

✿✿ SATURDAY ✿✿

My heart was beating like a drum machine set on high.
