I’ve joined the Rainbow Snippets group on Facebook. From their description: “Rainbow Snippets is a group for LGBTQ+ authors, readers, and bloggers to gather once a week to share six sentences from a work of fiction–a WIP or a finished work or even a 6-sentence book recommendation (no spoilers please!).” Pretty cool, eh? Don’t forget to “Like” my Facebook page and/or my Facebook profile while you’re over there checking out this fantastic group!
I’m snipping from The Best-Laid Plans, an unedited Work in Progress. This story continues The Contingency Plan. I’ve decided the good princes could use a little challenge on the way to the HEA we imagined for them at the end of their introductory short story. This is the third of three snippets giving the opening lines from the new story.
Told from Prince Efren’s 3rd-person POV.
Click these spoiler tags if you want a refresher of the snippets leading up to this new one:
This Week’s Snippet:
Hugh was one of the “mice,” the Zioneven spies who had long ago infiltrated the village where Sheburat’s castle was situated. They monitored the general mood of the people, gathered and traced rumors, and were continually on the lookout for anything that might be pertinent to Zioneven’s still-raw relationship and fledgling peace with Sheburat.”
“Where was he?”
“Tracking a man on the road to Gagel.”
Efren closed his eyes and took a calming breath. There was only one likely reason for this.
My sweet short story, The Contingency Plan is available at distributors everywhere (Books2Read Universal Buy-Link | Publisher/JMS Books).
If you’ve already read and enjoyed that one, you might also be interested in the bonus scenes (the opening scenes retold from Prince Efren’s POV).

Mice is a good term. Well done. Thank you for sharing. And Happy Writing!
Thank you! 😁
And again I hear dramatic music after the last line! 😉
🎶🥁🎵😄
Such an intriguing side to Efren we’re seeing here…
Thank you! Yes, there wasn’t a good opportunity to show this side of him in the short story. 🙂
Nice hook at the end — really makes me want to know more.
Thank you! 💞
Ooooh, intriguing. I can’t wait to read more 🙂
Well, you’ll get the first shot at it!
Ah, now I understand the real meaning of mice. Nice snippet.
Yes, Ah-ha! 😁 Hopefully it fits well enough.
I love the term mice for the spies
Thank you! The title came first, and the story idea sprang from that, including making “mice” fit in somewhere. 😀
The last line has be even more intrigued.
That’s the goal! Thank you! 💖
