TREADMILL Week 147 & What I #AmReading – Him Improvement by Tanya Chris

Treadmill Goals/Tracking

  • Get on the treadmill (or equivalent exercise) daily
  • Pace is fine at 30 min/mile, although I may up it on occasion
  • Time range between 30 minutes and 1 hour per day
  • Distance 1-2 miles per day
  • Read the chosen book. I’m officially modifying my original rule of not reading the book-of-the-week off-treadmill. I’m usually going to look at length and try to divide it up somewhat evenly per day, even if that means either closing that book early (if it’s short) or continuing after (if it’s long).

What I’m Reading

What I #amreading: Him Improvement by Tanya Chris

The course of true love runs through every neighborhood….

Only one thing stands between Gregory MacPherson II and his dream revitalization project for the gritty neighborhood of Ball’s End: a rinky-dink, run-down used bookstore called Hailey’s Comic. But when master negotiator Mac shows up to make a deal with the owner, he comes face-to-face with quirky, colorful Hailey—unexpectedly good-humored about Mac’s attempted eviction and, also unexpectedly, a hot guy.

Hailey won’t give up his lease, no matter how much money Mac offers. When it comes to consummating their mutual attraction, though, he’s a lot more flexible. Soon Mac has as hard a time prying himself out of Hailey’s bed as he does prying Hailey out of the building. But Hailey doubts Mac’s plans serve Ball’s End’s best interests, and he insists Mac give him a chance to prove his case. If they’re going to build a happy ever after, one of them will have to be remade….

My favorite lines this week…

✿✿ SUNDAY ✿✿

(I didn’t read after mowing today, but the 18 chapters divided nicely between the remaining 6 days.)

NOTE: All snippets (and the entire book) are told from Greg/Mac’s POV

✿✿ MONDAY ✿✿

Hailey hummed appreciatively. “Where’d you get this posture from?”

“A lot of correction growing up.”

“That doesn’t sound pleasant, but the results may have been worth it. I want to climb you like the tree you are. So gorgeously sturdy. You’re a very upright man, aren’t you?”

✿✿ TUESDAY ✿✿

Declan put his tablet down on the corner of Mac’s desk and slouched into one of the guest chairs. For a big man, Declan was remarkably floppy, always draping himself over furniture like he was a cat melting in the summer sun.

✿✿ WEDNESDAY ✿✿

“I was fun in college. I’m still fun.” Mac wrapped an arm around Hailey and pulled him back against his body to emphasize his point. “Were you in a frat?”

“Obviously not. I hung out with the group that was too cool to join a group. We were more likely to circulate petitions about the frats than go to their parties.”

✿✿ THURSDAY ✿✿

Was that how happiness worked? Was it a quantifiable thing that could be accumulated? For all Mac’s possessions and accolades, the accomplishments he could point to, the money safely squirreled away in various profitable ventures, he couldn’t say he was happy or that he’d be happier for having more of it. Happy was a sense he got when he was with Hailey—a sort of potential. Like he could be happy with Hailey if only he deserved him.

✿✿ FRIDAY ✿✿

“…How can he be the right guy for you if you’re not the right guy for him?”

“Because I want to be the right guy for him, Declan.”

✿✿ SATURDAY ✿✿

“You know you don’t have to do anything to be worth of love,” Hailey said when Mac still hadn’t answered a few blocks later. “You’re their son. You’re worthy of their love just by existing. Love that’s contingent on what you do isn’t exactly love anyway.”
