RAINBOW SNIPPETS – 2019-Oct. 12 – Weekend at Bigfoot’s #RainbowSnippets

I’ve joined the Rainbow Snippets group on Facebook. From their description: “Rainbow Snippets is a group for LGBTQ+ authors, readers, and bloggers to gather once a week to share six sentences from a work of fiction–a WIP or a finished work or even a 6-sentence book recommendation (no spoilers please!).” Pretty cool, eh? Don’t forget to “Like” my Facebook page and/or my Facebook profile while you’re over there checking out this fantastic group!

This week I’m snipping from Weekend at Bigfoot’s (see blurb, below the snippet), a 29,672-word novella. It’s scheduled for release on Saturday, October 19 at JMS Books both as an individual standalone and as part of a “Legendary Loves Trio” together with by In My Arms Again by Nell Iris and The Murky Depths by Kassandra Lea.

I think of Weekend at Bigfoot’s as a comedic paranormal romance with a flavor of mystery added. It’s technically paranormal, but doesn’t follow the usual formula of shifter story rules. There’s no fated love (although the MCs do experience a bit of insta-attraction), no MPREG, and no “packs” with alphas/betas/omegas/whatever. It’s got a contemporary feel with a paranormal surprise (Well, Wilson’s surprised. I don’t suppose the reader will be 😉).

A couple weeks ago, I started a NEW THREAD (The old thread can be read here). For context, MC Wilson (a tabloid reporter) is interviewing Harold Clayton, a man who claims to have seen Bigfoot, tried to trap him, but inadvertently killed an old woman, instead.

Open the spoiler tags for a quick and easy review of previous snippets in this thread right on this page.

Told from Wilson’s 3rd-person POV:

Weekend at Bigfoot's - 2019-September-28

“My story’s never changed.” Harold lifted his chin and tightened his jaw. “It was Bigfoot that I saw walk into the rows yonder. I never saw Ida. Not until she was already gone…dead, that is.”

Wilson straightened and peered over the berry field. The rows were angled so he couldn’t see down the length of them. But depending on how dense the bushes were at the time and how many rows back whatever Harold had seen had entered…“Were you able to see Bigfoot at all once he entered the row?”

Harold shook his head. “Not really. Not much, anyway. The occasional glimpse of the top of its head.”

Weekend at Bigfoot's - 2019-October 5

Wilson leaned forward. Harold had referred to Bigfoot as “it,” not “he.” “Were you wearing your glasses when you spotted Bigfoot? Were there any distinguishing characteristics?”

“I was wearing them. And it was a new prescription—only about two months old, anyway. I could see clearly enough.” He shook his head again. Wilson sensed this was going to become a familiar gesture. “No, nothing stood out.”

According to Emma, certain features couldn’t be missed. Not surprising that fifty years later, the con would be perpetrated by someone wearing a completely different costume. Who knew how many Bigfoot costumes were floating around?

This week’s snippet:

Weekend at Bigfoot's - 2019-October 12

“Would you say Bigfoot looked strong? Muscular?”

“No. It looked kinda saggy.”

So a lower quality costume than the one Emma had seen. Wilson nodded. “It’s fairly common for people to refer to Bigfoot as ‘he’.” A misogynistic default, to be sure, but it was fairly standard nonetheless. “I noticed you’re using ‘it.’ Any particular reason for that?”

Harold gave a low-energy shrug that still managed to look like it had sapped his strength as he wilted in his chair. “Not sayin’ it appeared too much like a woman, just that it didn’t stand out as manly. I suppose there’s got to be both of them out there. I guess ‘he’ just feels wrong, but I’m not comfortable calling it ‘she.’”

Possibly in part because a woman had ended up in his trap. In Harold’s favor, he did appear regretful.

Blurb & Links

It wasn’t supposed to be REAL! Bigfoot doesn’t actually exist. Yetis, shifters, creatures of the night…none of those exist. Right? Right?

There’s nothing about perky—some might even say twinkie—Oliver Hughes that would make a skeptic like Sensational News’ (Never Fake! We Swear!) reporter Wilson Banks think otherwise. But while pursuing soundbites for a tabloid story about Bigfoot, Wilson witnesses something he wasn’t meant to see.

In Wilson’s new reality, is there room for love with someone whose dreams are as big as his…er…feet?

This fun novella has a paranormal twist, a hint of mystery, and a flavorful dollop of romantic comedy. Mix it all together for a satisfying HEA!

    1. Yep. Seems like there would have to be both if they really were a species. Too bad Harold doesn’t consider their humanity enough to at least use “they” instead of “it.” But, that’s Harold for you. 😕
