What I’m Reading

Note: Although I will try to avoid them, my weekly reading snippets may or may not contain spoilers, so read at your own risk.

What I #amreading: Lost Souls Found by Kris T. Bethke (Turns out this is the 2nd book in a series, but features different MCs and can stand alone. I’ll definitely be looking up books 1 & 3 after this, though. 😁)

Ghostwalker Sam Jones has been half in love with Michael King since he started working at Requiem Inc. But Michael is his boss and a Guardian, to boot. Sam thinks they could make it work anyway, but Michael uses his position and his age to keep Sam at arm’s length.

When Sam continues to volunteer for the most dangerous cases, Michael has to intervene. He tells himself he’s just doing his job, but he’s always seen Sam as more than another operative, and he can’t bear the thought of not taking his chance.

The connection between them has been strong from the beginning, and Michael’s telepathy adds unexpected depth and an edge to their new romance, but working together while they try to build their relationship might be the hardest part of their job if they don’t make some sacrifices.

My favorite lines this week…

✿✿ SUNDAY ✿✿ (Sam’s POV)

At Tom’s nod of acknowledgement, Sam hurried toward a thick copse of trees. The tug was stronger, and he closed his eyes. He hated that part. Blake had once described it as akin to throwing up backward through your own nose, and it was an accurate description.

✿✿ MONDAY ✿✿ (Sam’s POV)

Just before he stepped through, Tom stopped and looked Sam right in the eye. “You’re a tenacious little shit. Go after what you want.” He paused, looked at the light again, and then back at Sam. “You say it takes two to tango? Then you need to make him want to dance.”

✿✿ TUESDAY ✿✿ (Michael’s POV)

For a minute Sam didn’t move. But that ache in Michael’s chest got stronger, more painful. It was Sam’s emotions, and it literally felt like his heart was breaking and a black hole was replacing it. Michael found it hard to breath…and he felt it all second hand. It had to be a thousand times worse for Sam. Michael lifted a hand before he could stop himself, but Sam skirted to the side and evaded his touch.

✿✿ WEDNESDAY ✿✿

“Did you ever think you missed on important thing in all that logic, Michael?”

“What’s that?” Michael sounded breathless, and Sam smiled.

“That it was the people you were with that were the problem. Not you.”

✿✿ THURSDAY ✿✿

“I mean, I know all these things about you, but do I really know you?”

Michael smirked and then settled down on the bed beside Sam and turned so he could see Sam’s profile. He reached out and traced one dark eyebrow.

“What is it that you think you know?”

✿✿ FRIDAY ✿✿

“You sound weird.”

“You always sound weird,” Michael shot back. “He hoped Avery would bristle and posture like he always did and forget what he asked.

“Nice try. Just tell me what’s going on.”

✿✿ SATURDAY ✿✿

The relief that flooded through Sam was not his own. He felt it pour off Michael in waves, and it nearly made him cry. Sam opened his arms and reached for Michael. Michael slid to his knees to wrap his arms around Sam’s waist. Sam bent and kissed Michael’s hair, and could hear Michael’s repeated “thank yous” in his head.
