Once again, I’m snipping from my new time travel novel, When Are You?
This is a random snippet that takes place after Oscar has gone missing, and Leo and Vinnie have figured out a few things about how they can (must?) find him. Here, the portal has reopened, and they’ve gone through in hopes of recovering Oscar.
From Leo’s 3rd-person POV:

So many questions were still unanswered. Had Oscar lived most of his life and was now older than them like in Vinnie’s dream? Would Oscar even remember them?
A cold steel hand gripped Leo’s heart with a relentless squeeze. What if Oscar were to become one of their attackers?
Leo cocked his head toward the trees to the left, opposite to where the men had appeared from last time. Whatever the scenario, the first thing they needed to do was take cover and observe. Figure out what they were facing.
Vinnie’s eyes were difficult to read, but his entire countenance reflected a renewed energy hinting at the same relief saturating Leo to the marrow of the bones that would eventually end up on a cold basement shelf in an unexceptional junior college. Odd, that relief, considering they still had no fucking idea what would happen in their next minutes, hours, days. Yet, as Sherlock Holmes would say, the game was afoot. Finally, action was being taken to find Oscar.
