TREADMILL Week 176 & What I #AmReading – Accidentally on Purpose by J.M. Snyder

Treadmill Goals/Tracking

  • Get on the treadmill (or equivalent exercise) daily
  • Pace is fine at 30 min/mile, although I may up it on occasion
  • Time range between 30 minutes and 1 hour per day
  • Distance 1-2 miles per day
  • Read the chosen book. I’m officially modifying my original rule of not reading the book-of-the-week off-treadmill. I’m usually going to look at length and try to divide it up somewhat evenly per day, even if that means either closing that book early (if it’s short) or continuing after (if it’s long).

What I #amreading: Accidentally on Purpose by J.M. Snyder

One morning before work, Alan Travers accidentally bumps into Detective Jim Garrison at a cafe where both men stop for coffee. The handsome younger man interests Alan, but he misses his chance to get to know the detective better and wonders if he’ll get another.

With the help of his nephew Brooks, Alan concocts a plan to try and get Jim’s attention “accidentally on purpose.” It works, but as things heat up between them, Alan worries what Jim will think if he finds out their getting together was no accident.

Then Brooks goes missing, and Alan’s going to have to come clean. But is he the only one not being truthful?

My favorite lines this week…

✿✿ SUNDAY ✿✿

The light over the stove gives the kitchen a warm, homey feel. Alan gestures for Detective Garrison—Jim—to have a seat at one of the stools at the breakfast bar, then turns to the Keurig machine on the counter. “So, what’ll it be, mate?” Alan asks. “Coffee, tea…”

Silently, he finishes the thought with the rhyme, Or me? He clamps his mouth shut to keep from saying it out loud.

✿✿ MONDAY ✿✿

Who’s he kidding? It’s taken him this long to just build up the courage to invite Jim in. By the time he gets around to asking the man to stay the night, one or both of them will probably be too old to be any good in the sack. Most likely it’ll be him.

✿✿ TUESDAY ✿✿

“Penny for your thoughts,” Jim says, bringing Alan out of the past.

“Hmm? Oh, nothing.” Things are off to a good start between them; Alan doesn’t think Jim needs to know yet that this entire evening was ultimately orchestrated by a fourteen-year-old who was paid for it, to boot.

✿✿ WEDNESDAY ✿✿

“Hey,” Jim says, his voice barely audible over the quiet radio.

Alan turns in his seat, or as much as he can with the steering wheel in his way. He matches Jim’s tone. “Right, well. here we are.”

Jim turns, too, leaning his head against the back of the seat. His hand pulls Alan’s over onto his side of the car. It’s on his upper thigh now, and Alan’s all too aware of how close Jim’s crotch is to their clasped fingers. Something wiggly flutters through his stomach.

✿✿ THURSDAY ✿✿

One turns into two, which turns into three, then four. Alan reaches blindly behind him for the door to Jim’s apartment because he doesn’t want to be the first to pull away. Finally Jim steps back and Alan manages to get the door open. When he steps out into the hall, Jim says, “Call me.”

✿✿ FRIDAY ✿✿

Jim stares blankly at him. “You.”

“Me.” Alan runs a hand through his hair, disheveling it, then combs it down with his fingers. He looks at Jim, then looks away. He doesn’t want to have to admit this.

“You,” Jim says again.

Alan sort of shrugs and winces as he nods. Yes.

“How do you mean?”

Clenching his eyes shut, Alan groans. “Ugh, right. Well. See…”

✿✿ SATURDAY ✿✿

He pulls it wide to find Jim standing on his porch. With a wink, Jim teases, “Your booty call’s here.”

“Oh hush. Get in here.”
