Hello, everyone! Thank you, Addison, for letting me stop by. [Itâs always a pleasure, Ofelia!] Can you believe itâs October already? For me, October is falling leaves and frost-covered grounds, crispy air and woollen socks. For those on the other side of the pond, Iâm assuming October is ghosts and witches and candy.
Iâm always a little envious of that.
For a Swede, Christmas is a big thing. We celebrate Easter since itâs the right thing to do. And then we have Midsummer Eve. I think we Scandies are the only ones who celebrate it, at least the way we do it. Itâs a big thing, bigger than Easter, but after midsummer, we have nothing until we hit Christmas. We donât celebrate Halloween, and we donât celebrate Thanksgiving.
As a result, my idea of Halloween is what I see on TV and read in books. Lucky for me, I spend several hours a day in a fantasy world where I make the rules, and in that world, we have Halloween đ
I have a world where ghosts are real, and where shifters, psychics, and wizards have their own police department. I wrote Soul Eater for Halloween last year. Itâs about Thaddeus Ezax, a wizard, and Sandulf Hunter, a dead werewolf, and theyâre solving a case of missing women.
A few months later, Mind Scrambler was published. Itâs about Kol Jaecar, a panther shifter, and Elijah Long, an empath. Kol is Thaddeusâs boss, and when Elijah is kidnapped, Rockshadeâs Paranormal Investigations Department sets out to find him.
There will be a third story in the series, I have an idea for it, but time keeps slipping through my fingers. So when JMS Books sent out a call for short Trick or Treat stories, I figured a quick glimpse at what is going on in Rockshade could be a good idea while we wait for me to get my arse in the chair and write the final story.
Ghost Dater is about Thaddeus and Sandy from Soul Eater, and weâre now one year later. Itâs Halloween again, and Thad is off work. He has it in his mind that heâs gonna cook for Sandy so they can have a romantic dinner for two. The problem is that Sandy is a ghost and canât eat anything, so first, he has to figure out a way to make Sandy alive enough to be able to consume food.
Since he wants it to be a surprise, he tries to trick Sandy into believing theyâre having a party, but how do you trick a ghost werewolf who also happens to be your mate?
Excerpt
He could never be more than a hundred and fifty feet away from Thaddeus, and unless Thaddeus shot energy into him, Sandy was invisible to the world.
When Thaddeus gave him an unimpressed look, Sandy concealed his teeth. What the hell was he doing? It wasnât Thaddeusâs fault he was dead. He took a deep breath, despite not needing to breathe. âWhere are we going?â
âWeâre getting Halloween decorations, then weâre heading to the station. I need to talk to Elora about a thing.â
Sandy held in a sigh. âA thing?â
âAh, yeah, weâre having a party.â Thaddeus grimaced.
âWeâre having a party?â Sandy spoke slowly. He wasnât in the mood for a fucking party.
âYup, for Halloween, and I need to speak to Elora about⊠a thing.â
A thing? Sandy sighed.
Thaddeus grinned, and Sandyâs heart somersaulted. His mate. He wanted to kiss him, touch him, apologize for having been an ass the last few days, but as he opened his mouth to speak, the car behind them honked.
âOops.â Thaddeus grimaced and got them rolling.
Sandy sat back. He could drive. If Thaddeus made him solid, he could drive, but since he was dead, he didnât have a driverâs license anymore. Apart from Thaddeus, he didnât have anything. âIâm not in the mood for a party.â
âRespectfully, dear, I donât give a fuck. Iâve had enough of you sulking. I know youâre feeling sorry for yourself, but I have to live with you too, you know? Iâm sorry your life didnât turn out the way you intended it to. Being killed messes things up, I get that, but I wasnât the one who killed you, so I donât see how I should be the one being punished.â
Thaddeusâ words were like a whip.
âWeâre having a party. Youâre gonna smile, and youâre gonna be polite and act as if you still want to be aliveââ
âI do.â
âYouâre gonna act like you still love meââ
âI do!â
âAnd that everything is peachy. Understand?â
âThaddeus, I love you.â
Thaddeus snorted and focused on the road. Sandy couldâve sworn he was blinking faster than normal. Fuck.
âThadââ
âLetâs get some pumpkins, yeah?â
Shit. He had to make this right. âThaddeusââ
âNot now, Sandy. I know things are rocky, Iâm not as oblivious as most think, but I canât have this discussion in the car, okay?â
âThings are not rocky!â
âYou havenât touched me in over a week. Should I remind you that youâre a shifter? You touch all the fucking time. You donât come to bed anymore, so donât tell me weâre not in trouble.â Thaddeus rubbed his eyes in an angry gesture.
âWeâre not in trouble. I needed to think.â Pace. Heâd paced the living room like the trapped animal he was. Sandy didnât sleep. He didnât dream. He didnât eat or drink. He didnât need to breathe. But normally, he spent the night in bed with Thaddeus, reveling in being close to his mate.
He glanced at Thaddeus. His eyes were glassy and his grip on the steering wheel tight. Shit. He hadnât realized how much his brooding was affecting Thaddeus.
âI love you. I will never have to act as if I love you because I always will, okay?â
Thaddeus didnât reply, and Sandy halted a sigh.
âI love you, and I never want to be away from you, understand? Iâve been sulking because I wish I had more control over my life, but never think I would want to trade the life I have with you for something as trivial as going for a run in the woods or to go hunting or⊠anything.â
When Thaddeus didnât reply, he bit the inside of his cheek. âSo, a party, you say?â God, he didnât want a party. And they did not need more pumpkins, bats, spiderwebs or whatever else Thaddeus had in mind. The house already looked like a haunted house exhibitionâequipped with a real ghost and all. âWho is coming?â
âThe guys from workââ
âReally? I thought Ric was going to the cabin.â He brought his family up there every Halloween.
âChange of plans. Ricâs on call during the weekend and the mountains are too far away should something happen. Lots of crazy wizards out on Halloween, you know.â
Blurb
Thaddeus Esax has a grumpy werewolf problem. For a year, heâs been mated to Sandulf Hunter, a ghost werewolf he brought back from the dead without meaning to. Itâs been great. Thadâs been happy, and he believed Sandy was too. But Sandy has been sulking for more than a week, and Thad fears their relationship isnât going as well as he believed.
The problem with being mated to a ghost is that said ghost never can leave your side, and therefore itâs extremely hard to keep secrets. Thaddeus wants to surprise Sandy, to cheer him up, but to do that, he has to trick him into believing theyâre doing something theyâre not.
Telling Sandy theyâre having a Halloween party doesnât go over well, but how do you trick a ghost? By making him believe heâll be dressed up as a pirate for an evening, of course.
