This month’s topic is…

Someone insults your MC. How do they react?

I wasn’t feeling particularly inspired by this question. My brain felt a need for specific insults rather than a generic “someone insults your MC…” So I fell down a Google rabbit hole looking for that inspiration.

I wasn’t disappointed, but I’m not sure how much it helps because I think most of my MCs would laugh, kind of like l did. Which, I suppose, is an answer of sorts.

For the generic question, although their personalities will vary, my MCs tend toward the level-headed end of the spectrum. The drama in their stories comes from outside sources rather than because one of them is hot headed or prone to willfully misunderstanding things.

If some random asshat on the street tossed a boneheaded insult at one of my MCs, at most, one of them might tighten up as if their knee-jerk reaction would be to toss an insult back at them or worse, escalate to something physical, but they would stop themselves before allowing that to happen, and the other MC would hold them back if a flash of anger got the better of them.

They would generally understand that anyone within hearing range of the “insult” who mattered would see it for what it is. They would agree that it’s best to let the fool doing the insulting advertise their ignorance and/or character without being sucked into it.

Of all my characters, I think Raymond from Of Rats and Cats would get my vote for most likely to give a reaction, but I’m sure it would be entertaining.

So what about some of the “insults” I came across when I fell down that Buzzfeed rabbit hole? How about this one?:

The aforementioned Raymond from Of Rats and Cats would probably curl his lip, roll his eyes, say “classy” in a sarcastic tone, then file it away in his brain until he landed in a good situation to use the line himself.

How about this one?

LOL. Whelp, assuming this was prior to meeting their partner, any of my MCs would have to acknowledge that it was a fair assessment even though they’d been trying for suave, and would simply be thankful it was a text and their target couldn’t see their wicked blush. If this was with their partner, they would both laugh their asses off because it had probably been deliberate.

On the other hand, wouldn’t that be a fun start for a meet-cute? 😁 Who wants to write it?
