What’s on my bookshelves?…
What’s on my physical bookshelves (as opposed to my ereader? It’s a bit of a mixture, actually. Both fiction and non-fiction in various categories:
- Favorite Reads – When a fiction book qualifies as one of my all-time favorites, then as my budget permits, I will purchase a physical copy of the book to add to my bookcase. I’ve got some that are pending—pricy books I’m hoping to see discounted some day, and others that are out of print (hopefully temporarily)—but many of my faves, both M/M and otherwise, are on display.
- Old University Textbooks – I’ve still got some, but by no means all, of my university textbooks. If it wasn’t a math or chemistry book (my major and minor), I sold it back to the bookstore. Textbooks that were one of those, I wanted to keep, but a few got sold back due to needing the money at the time. I no longer reference them for anything, so I’m not sure what the ongoing point of keeping them is, but they’re there, taking up space on my shelves.
- Children’s Books – Because of course I want to encourage the little ones to develop a love of reading!
- Reference Materials – I prefer looking things up in physical books. I like being able to flip through and/or back and forth with ease. The writing-related reference books are technically on my desk (due to space considerations) rather than in the bookcases, but I think they still count for the purposes of this list.
- Other – Some are more recent purchases or gifts that were bought without first reading the ebook. Some are still languishing on my oversized TBR, others I’ve read and enjoyed. Both fiction and non-fiction are found in this category.
- Other – Books that survived my huge downsizing project for a house move more than a decade ago. Over the years—starting long before ebooks were a thing—I’d built up a collection that took up an entire long wall of bookcases for me, and another, shorter wall of bookcases for kids). Now my books are in two extra-tall bookcases, and a rebuilt collection of children’s books for the grandkids are in a couple small ones. The books I kept were either faves at the time, or books that I’d purchased but had remained on my TBR and I still wanted to read them. Some of those were popular contemporary books, and some were old classics that I kept telling myself I would get to one of these days. I’m becoming less and less sure, now, that I ever will. Alas. Both fiction and non-fiction are found in this category.
The fiction section is arranged alphabetically by the author’s last name. Mostly. I have an embarrassingly large collection of Pride and Prejudice “What if…” and continuation books by other authors, but I have them all placed alphabetically at the end of the Jane Austen section. Otherwise, all genres are mixed and sorted by author.
The non-fiction section is loosely grouped by general category. I think I’m overdue for another round of downsizing in all sections.
