Preface

I love short stories. Sometimes a brief “snapshot” taken from a couple’s larger story is all that’s wanted. The narrative of “how they met” is the focus of six of the shorts in this set—quirky tales ranging from meeting at a charity fundraiser, to college kids pranking each other, to a mishap at a XXX adult video arcade.

Also included is a story featuring a well-established couple’s wedding dilemma, a friends-to-lovers tale, a coming-out-of-the-closet drama, and a continuation short that follows one of those how-we-mets. Rounding out this collection is an account revisiting the main characters from my full-length novel, ’Til Death Do Us Part.

All of these stories are contemporary, although one has a bit of paranormal flavor to it. Heat ratings range from “fairly sweet” to “rather steamy.” Excepting the final story, all were originally written in 2008 and early 2009. One (“Photo Shoot”) started out as a prompt word ficlet that I later fleshed out to a more complete story. Each has received a thorough overhaul, some more extensive than others. I hope you’ll enjoy reading them as much as I did writing them.

Excerpt from Nevermore

Ted sat cross-legged on the rough, sand-covered beach towel as he watched Madelyn and Harris run toward him, dripping wet, sand covering their little feet. With the sun still high and bright in the western sky, he reached for a bottle of SPF 50 to reapply lotion to their pale skin.

“Aw, Dad, again?” Madelyn whined.

Ted laughed at his daughter. “Again and again and again.” He ruffled her hair as she sat beside him. He squeezed sunblock onto her outstretched hand, and she rubbed it on her legs while Ted worked on her back and arms.

“Close your eyes, sweetie.”

She turned her scrunched-up face toward him, and he rubbed lotion onto her face and neck, then gave her arm a light squeeze.

“All done, toots.” He smiled, and the six-year-old affected a dramatic “oh-I-am-so-put-upon” sigh, then scooted off to shovel sand into one of the buckets.

“I can do my own, Dad,” eight-year-old Harris claimed. He was growing up fast and insisted on doing as much as he could on his own.

Ted winked. “Except for your back, kiddo. I’ll do that for you.” He rubbed sunblock onto the boy’s back, then handed Harris the bottle to finish the rest.

“Daddy,” Madelyn said, “will you help me build the castle? It keeps breaking.”

“Your sand is too dry, Maddie. Fill the buckets with water first, and dump them in the sand you’ll be using.” She ran toward the water with a bucket in each hand.

Ted smoothed out a base for their castle, and Harris dug the moat that would surround it.

Madelyn returned with the water buckets and began mixing the sloppy sand. When the kids happily formed sand bricks and built up their castle walls, Ted lay on the towel and closed his eyes as he listened to their chatter.

A soft sigh escaped his lips as he thought about the fun he’d had with them. They all loved spending time at the beach. Maybe they’d go to the zoo tomorrow, or perhaps see that new Disney flick. Madelyn had dropped at least a half dozen not-so-subtle hints about the movie, so at least one of the kids was sure to be thrilled. He made the most of his weekends with them. Keri was fair-minded, and they were generally able to work out any modifications to the formal custody agreement to accommodate their schedules, but it still seemed there was never enough time with the children.

For this reason alone, he sometimes second-guessed his decision to seek a divorce, but in the end he knew it had been the right decision. He’d never been able to work up the courage to confess the full truth to Keri, and they’d parted ways agreeing that, for whatever reason, there was simply no spark between them.

He’d tried so hard in the early years, pretending an interest where one didn’t actually exist. He’d wanted to feel attracted to Keri, a beautiful person, inside and out. Ted was glad she was the mother of his children, and he was truly thankful she’d found happiness in a second marriage.

A smile tugged at his lips as a certain person came to mind, then he frowned. If only he had a stable relationship, which seemed out of the question. He’d pushed the man away yet again last night. Not literally, of course. No, they’d been plenty close. But once again he’d refused to share contact information or even his real name. How many times had they been together now? Thirty-five? Forty? And how many times had they sought each other out, haunting the same bar, and missed?

Ted’s hand wandered to his hip, where a fresh “love bite” lay hidden beneath his swim trunks. He shivered, visualizing those strong hands holding down his hips.

Living his life openly with this man by his side was a nightly dream, but it was a risk he wasn’t sure he wanted to take. How far would Keri’s reasonable nature stretch? If she knew the truth, would it put his visitation time with Madelyn and Harris at risk? Perhaps he should seek legal advice.

“Mr. Rhoads?” A young female voice brought him out of his reverie. Ted bit back a sigh and sat up to see which of his former students had discovered him. There were two of them, both from his third period history class the previous year.

“Rhonda, Megan, how are you girls? Are you looking forward to high school this fall?” He smiled at them. They’d been good students. They’d always gotten their work done, although they did like to prattle on in class when they were supposed to be working on group projects—typical eighth-grade girls.

“Yeah,” Rhonda replied. “Sort of. It’s kinda scary, you know?”

“You girls don’t have anything to worry about. You’re both excellent students. Are you enjoying your summer break?”

“Oh, yeah, lots!” Rhonda spoke up again. “We love the beach. Megan’s dad brought us here today.” She glanced behind Ted.

He stood and turned, putting out his hand to introduce himself. “Hello, I’m Ted Rhoads. Pleased to…” He froze, his jaw dropping.

There was a reason he drove an hour each way to a neighboring city when he felt like cutting loose for an occasional night of fun and debauchery, and it was standing right in front of him with a knowing, shit-eating grin spreading across his face. It wasn’t quite the same as the grin the man had been wearing just last night.

Blaine is a well-dressed, high priced attorney, and George is a hairy mountain of an auto mechanic. This odd couple meets up one evening on a slow night at a bar. The pickings are slim. Slim enough for these opposites to eyeball each other and ask themselves just how bad they want to get laid.

Pleasantly surprised by the evening’s outcome, Blaine is faced with a dilemma. Should he throw caution to the wind and pursue George, or steer clear of that unexpected distraction to his carefully structured life.

King Kong vs. The Skinny Pirate
Addison Albright © 2017

Blaine sat on an empty barstool between a likely prospect and King-fucking-Kong. He lifted his chin, summoning the bartender as he ran freshly manicured hands over the textured cashmere of his Kiton pinstripe suit, smoothing out imaginary wrinkles.

“A Skinny Pirate, please.”

The bartender quirked an eyebrow but otherwise kept his face expressionless. “Coming right up.”

Blaine’s peripheral vision picked up movement to his left. King Kong was looking him over. He turned his head to the right, ignoring the hairy behemoth, to check out his hopeful hookup for the evening.

Maybe a couple inches taller than himself, the man was casually dressed in freshly pressed khakis and a clean navy polo shirt. His dark wavy hair was neatly trimmed, and his hands, while not professionally manicured, were well maintained.

The man concentrated on a Screwdriver, studiously ignoring him, though.

The bartender placed the drink in front of Blaine, and he slapped some bills on the bar.

“Why’s that called a ‘Skinny Pirate’? Looks like rum and Coke to me.”

Blaine sighed and turned to the muscle-bound hulk. “Because it’s made with Captain Morgan rum and Diet Coke.”

He picked up his drink and spun on the stool to cast his gaze over the room. No prospects. No singles, anyway. The patrons all appeared to be in couples.

King Kong turned on his seat and brought a domestic longneck to his lips. The man was big and hairy—except for his bald head—but basically clean, albeit slightly rumpled, in jeans and a snug T-shirt. Minute traces of grease stained his cuticles, and his beard could use a trim. A gold hoop glinted on his right ear lobe.

“Not much hope out there. I’ve already scoped the place.”

Blaine glanced at the guy on his other side. Maybe there was still a chance.

“Preppy there’s got someone who’s going to be joining him.” King Kong shrugged. “I already tried.”

Blaine heaved another sigh and took a more thoughtful look at King Kong. How bad did he really want to get laid tonight?

King Kong grinned. “Feelin’ desperate, are ya?”

Maybe not that bad. Fucker.

King Kong actually waggled his eyebrows. “I showered and everything.”

Blaine crossed his arms, and his jaw tightened. The man was laughing at him. Sure, he was picky, but he had a right to be, goddammit. He sucked in a deep breath and slowly blew it out, then took a sip of his Skinny Pirate. “What’s your name? Or should I just call you ‘King Kong’?”

The man’s laughter reached his eyes. “That depends. You wanna be my Ann Darrow?”

I’ve joined the Rainbow Snippets group on Facebook. From their description: “Rainbow Snippets is a group for LGBTQ+ authors, readers, and bloggers to gather once a week to share six sentences from a work of fiction–a WIP or a finished work or even a 6-sentence book recommendation (no spoilers please!).” Pretty cool, eh? Don’t forget to “Like” my Facebook page and/or my Facebook profile while you’re over there checking out this fantastic group!

RainbowToday’s snippet is from To Love and To Cherisha novel spinning off from ’Til Death Do Us Part, now available in both ebook and print formats.

Picking up where I left off last week when Nash had rushed to the bathroom to vomit under the emotional strain of the thought of meeting Sam (his former fiancé) again. Here are seven lines (sorry) told from Nash’s 3rd-person POV:

Nash flushed, then found a washcloth in the cabinet under the sink. Thankfully there was a bottle of mouthwash there, too. He wet the cloth and wiped his face, then tried to open the bottle with one hand. His hand shook as he placed the bottle between his thighs, then he dropped it and whimpered, reflexively, before remembering his listening audience.

He took a deep breath, leaned against the wall, and closed his eyes. He needed to get a grip. Falling apart like this wasn’t going to help matters.

Love Is Proud

Love Is Proud is a charity anthology to benefit the victims of the Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando. It includes short stories (2k-5k words) and poetry by JMS Books’ authors.

Okay, Then is a standalone short with its own HFN. It revisits the main characters from ’Til Death Do Us Part, and takes place within the timeline of the flashback scenes from that novel, detailing Sam & Henry’s first date/encounter after Sam tells Henry “Okay, then” while they’re together on a research trip in Honiara in the Solomon Islands.

From This Day Forward

Revisiting the characters from ’Til Death Do Us Part, Henry and Sam Miller-Greene are enjoying life in the summer after Henry’s rescue from a small South Pacific island, where Henry and three others were marooned.

Henry and Sam thought adopting Aiden—a child with whom Henry’d been stranded—would be smooth sailing. Matters are complicated by the public nature of their rescue that has turned the survivors into overnight celebrities. Anti-gay fueled animus rears its ugly head in the blogosphere, causing concerns over the impact libelous rumors might have on Aiden.

Their nightmare separation behind them, Henry and Sam are anxious to renew both the intensity of their former intimacies—now hampered by having a curious and still apprehensive child sharing their home—and their commitment to one another.

RainbowToday’s snippet is from To Love and To Cherisha novel spinning off from ’Til Death Do Us Part, now available in ebook formats and coming in print on November 30th.

This week I’ve moved away from the thread of snippets I’ve been sharing the past few weeks. This is from a scene later in the story. Nash has moved in with his fiancé (Emmitt) and is unpacking some of Emmitt’s belongings. Here are six lines told from Nash’s 3rd-person POV:

Unpacking Emmitt’s things proved to be interesting. It was a good way to get to know his future husband—or at least a way to learn about his reading and movie preferences (mysteries and a well-rounded mix of action flicks, sci-fi, and rom-coms), and get a peek at his history.

There was an old family photo with a couple he assumed must be Emmitt’s parents, and three boys. Two of them were older, probably college or post-graduate aged, and a teenager who looked like a younger hippie-fied version of Emmitt. The kid’s hair was well past his shoulders, and he was sporting a carefree happy grin and making a peace sign with the fingers of his right hand. Nash never would have believed it if he hadn’t seen it for himself.

This snippet picks up directly where I left off last week. Nash has worked up the nerve to open the door and enter (his best friend and temporary roommate) Harley’s apartment where his tardiness and disheveled appearance is raising eyebrows. Here are seven lines (sorry—one over the limit again) told from Nash’s 3rd-person POV:

Harley placed the empty can on the counter and walked to Nash, whose face heated as Harley slowly looked him up and down. “You had sex, didn’t you? All I want to know is did you pay for it?”

“What? Shut up!” This was so not going as planned. Not that he’d had a plan, but he needed to get this conversation under control.

Camille of Joyfully Jay Reviews gives the book 4.75 out of 5 stars and says “All in all, this is an excellent read! It’s a quirky get-together that takes the common marriage-of-convenience trope and turns it into something infinitely sweeter by the clever use of the amnesia trope, culminating in a rather satisfying story.”

Bethany of Rainbow Gold Reviews gives the book 10 out of 10 pots of gold and says I highly recommend this one as well as book one.”

Natosha of Gay Book Reviews gives the book 5 out of 5 stars and says “I love that I was able to take Nash and Emmitt’s journey to finding each other and then finding so much more. This was a wonderful read.

Freya of Sinfully MM Book Reviews gives the book 4 out of 5 stars and says “On more than one occasion I was tempted to skip to an end that left me with a lump in my throat.”

Jeri of Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words gives the book 3 out of 5 stars and says This was a sweet book.

Will Nash find love again? Of course he will. Will he go about it in the usual manner? Now that’s another story entirely.

Jilted by his fiancé two weeks before their wedding, Nash Marino’s outlook on life in general, and love in particular, is jaded. After months of couch-surfing, Nash is fed up. He’s sick and tired of his living conditions, worn out by the demands of his nursing job, and despairs of ever finding love again. In fact, he doesn’t think he’s capable of true love. Monogamy, commitment, companionship, and regular sex…that’s all he wants, and the sooner, the better.

When Nash crosses paths with a like-minded man who’s also in need of a live-in nurse for a beloved relative, Nash figures all his problems are solved. Matters are complicated by a freak accident and amnesia. When Nash’s marriage of convenience scheme is muddied by notions of love after his memory reboot, will their plans go awry, or will Nash’s new outlook on life be just what the doctor ordered?

Excerpt

“Fuck dating. Let first impressions rule. I could’ve saved myself a world of hurt and heartache if I’d done that over the years. I don’t know why I stuck it out with some of my shitty boyfriends either. Wishful thinking, I guess. But you’re right, I knew practically instantly that my husband was going to be the love of my life. So yeah, don’t bother dating…simply ask him to marry you five minutes into the conversation. I’m sure it won’t scare him off or anything.” She accompanied that final instruction with a cocked eyebrow and one of her trademark smirks, as if the scornful tone she’d used wasn’t enough to keep the sarcasm from going over his head. Subtlety wasn’t Angela’s strong suit.

“Sage advice.” He raised a spoonful of soup in salute, then brought it toward his mouth.

Someone bumped his chair from behind. Nash rocked forward, and soup spilled down his chin.

Angela stifled a snicker, and a male voice he recognized said, “Sorry about that.”

Nash snatched up his napkin to wipe his face, and turned. “No problem, Dr. Burlingham.”

Although it was, of course. He felt like a fool with chicken noodle dripping down his neck. Dr. Burlingham stood there looking at him with an odd intensity. Probably thinking Nash had a screw loose or was some kind of man-whore if he’d overheard much of Nash’s rant. Whatever, it was none of the man’s business, and Nash would hopefully not be working at this hospital—where the doctor’s opinion would affect him—for much longer anyway.

After gazing at him for an uncomfortably long couple of seconds, Dr. Burlingham turned back to Dr. Gilbert Wilson, a friendly and outgoing pediatrician whose close friendship with Dr. Burlingham had long stymied the hospital grapevine. Dr. Wilson gaped at Dr. Burlingham with his own less-squinty version of Angela’s earlier side-eye. Except Dr. Wilson’s version was accompanied by a comical upturn to one side of his mouth, indicating his enjoyment of the scene—rather than concern for his friend’s mental health, as Angela’s countenance had implied.

As soon as the two doctors walked around the corner, Angela burst into a fit of the chuckles that would have been better suited to the set of Dumb and Dumber.

“Hardee-har-har,” was the best he could come up with in reply. Nash grabbed her napkin and crammed it down the front of his uniform to mop up the rest of the soup drippage.

“Did you see the look on his face?” Angela managed to gasp between giggles.

“Which one? The repugnance on Dr. Burlingham’s or the glee on Dr. Wilson’s?”

The guffaws coming from across the table intensified and drew some curious glances as well as several censorious glares. “Seriously, Angela, you’re going to give yourself a hernia. It wasn’t that funny.”

He nudged her bottle toward her and she took the hint, a couple deep breaths, and a slug of water. “Wasn’t repugnance,” she wheezed.

“What are you talking about?”

“The look on Dr. Burlingham’s face. It wasn’t repugnance. Closer to yearning.”

“Don’t even.” Nash froze. “Right now your position on the hospital grapevine is scaring the shit out of me. Don’t. Even.”

She held up a hand. “I wouldn’t. Calm down, sweetie. I’m stating facts, is all.”

“There’s nothing remotely factual about that statement, so don’t start with me. And so help me, don’t even hint at joking about something that stupid on the pediatrics floor where Dr. Wilson might get wind of it.”

She pointed a finger—or rather the finger—at him and bit out, “I’m not a fucking idiot.”

No, she wasn’t. Nash eased back in his seat. And she was a good friend. He sighed. “Sorry. I know you wouldn’t. Just put it down to the stress, okay?”

She gave his hand a squeeze and the tightness that had appeared in her shoulders visibly relaxed as well. “I’m sorry, too, sweetie. I shouldn’t tease you right now. I promise I would never start or feed any rumors about you, stupid or otherwise, but there truly was something in his look. I just want you to have a heads-up on that.”

Nash closed his eyes and took a deep, cleansing breath. It was doubtful, and so not a complication that would be appreciated right now in his life.

#RainbowSnippets November 12, 2016 – To Love and To Cherish

I’ve joined the Rainbow Snippets group on Facebook. From their description: “Rainbow Snippets is a group for LGBTQ+ authors, readers, and bloggers to gather once a week to share six sentences from a work of fiction–a WIP or a finished work or even a 6-sentence book recommendation (no spoilers please!).” Pretty cool, eh? Don’t forget to “Like” my Facebook page and/or my Facebook profile while you’re over there checking out this fantastic group!

RainbowToday’s snippet is from To Love and To Cherisha novel spinning off from ’Til Death Do Us Part, coming out in ebook format TODAY!!!! (and in print on November 30th)

This snippet picks up directly where I left off last week. Nash has just worked up the nerve to open the door and enter (his best friend and temporary roommate) Harley’s apartment. Oliver is Harley’s boyfriend. Oliver observed that Nash is looking rather rumpled. Here are seven lines (sorry—one over the limit…again) told from Nash’s 3rd-person POV:

Harley’s forehead crinkled as his eyebrows raised. “So he is. Where’d you go? I thought you said you’d be right back.”

“Who are you, my dad?” Nash immediately regretted his immature reaction.

Oliver laughed and elbowed Harley. “Methinks your son is hiding something, Padre.”
