Below are the (unedited) opening lines from my (almost complete) WiP titled To Love and To Cherish. A blurb is still pending, but here’s a short tag line:

Will Nash find love again? Of course he will. Will he go about it in the usual way? Now that’s another story entirely.

The elderly man shifted in the wheelchair, and Nash Marino reached down to tuck in the loose blanket around his patient. He glanced up as the elevator stopped, then blinked and stiffened a bit when he saw a familiar figure from his recent past step into the elevator. Not that he had anything against Truman Greene—he’d always enjoyed the company of this man and his entire family. In fact, he missed them. A lot.

It wasn’t Truman’s fault things had gone so wrong between Nash and the man’s son. Hell, it wasn’t anybody’s fault. That was one of the things that pissed Nash off the most about the whole situation. He couldn’t reasonably be angry at anyone involved, not without looking like a jackass. He was definitely more than a little peeved at fate, however.

Revisiting the characters from ’Til Death Do Us Part, Henry and Sam Miller-Greene are enjoying life in the summer after Henry’s rescue from a small South Pacific island, where Henry and three others were marooned.

Henry and Sam thought adopting Aiden—a child with whom Henry’d been stranded—would be smooth sailing. Matters are complicated by the public nature of their rescue that has turned the survivors into overnight celebrities. Anti-gay fueled animus rears its ugly head in the blogosphere, causing concerns over the impact libelous rumors might have on Aiden.

Their nightmare separation behind them, Henry and Sam are anxious to renew both the intensity of their former intimacies—now hampered by having a curious and still apprehensive child sharing their home—and their commitment to one another.

Flash Fiction Friday – July 15, 2016

Flash Fiction Friday

Flash Fiction: There isn’t a standard specific definition for this term beyond “extremely short”, but for the purposes of my “Flash Fiction Friday” posts it will mean a precisely 100-word story scene (aka “Drabble”) written from a photo prompt.

Today’s prompt picture is:

793955081b25c1d06503809832588617

Disclaimer: The images used in this blog’s posts are found from different sources all over the Internet, and are assumed to be in public domain and are displayed under the fair use principle. Click the image to be taken to my source for today’s photo prompt.

This is a special Adventures with Harrison and Mason short scene, flashing back to the duo’s very first meeting.

The doorbell rang as Harrison made his way to the front door with an eye toward escaping the excruciatingly dull party, so he answered the door. The eyes on the breathtakingly beautiful man standing there lit up when he saw Harrison.

He stepped inside, grinned, and reached for Harrison’s tie. He pulled Harrison close and said, “My name is Mason, and I no longer have any idea why I was dreading this fucking party.”

Mason pulled Harrison close and kissed him just above his right eyebrow. Maybe Harrison didn’t need to be in such a hurry to leave after all.

Here are 143 words from my upcoming short story, From This Day Forward.

Context isn’t really needed. This is from Henry’s 1st-person POV:

I burrowed my face into Sam’s neck and enjoyed the warmth and strength of his arms. We rocked together for a few moments, then I pulled away from his neck and angled up my face. He took the hint, and his mouth covered mine, softly teasing, his lips caressing, then adding firm pressure as his tongue skimmed my lips and tenderly pushed past. I reveled in the intoxicating mix of sensations—the salty taste of Sam’s skin, the coarse caress of unshaven skin brushing my cheek, and his natural fragrance. Forgotten for five long years, I was now hyper-aware of his intoxicating musk.

A lovely, barely perceptible tremor stirred beneath my hands as they progressed up Sam’s back, applying pressure, gently kneading. His hands cupped my face, and I hooked my arms to grip his shoulders from behind. Muscles flexed beneath my palms.

These are the first ten lines from my upcoming short story, From This Day Forward. The blurb is at the bottom of the post. This is told from Henry’s 1st-person POV:

Christine Granger answered the door, exclaimed, “Henry!” and enveloped me in a huge mama-bear hug. Then she burst into tears. I patted her back, and as much as I appreciated the sentiment, I hoped the whole afternoon wouldn’t be a chain reaction of this behavior. But considering Christine was the wife of my old department chairman, and I’d seen her only a handful of times each year, that was probably an optimistic expectation.

Sam held Buddy—or I should say Aiden. The almost-six-year-old had decided he wanted to use his “real” name after all. Although his upbringing thus far had been decidedly primitive, he was intelligent and quickly picked up on what would be considered typical behavior back here in civilized society. Apparently, he wanted to assimilate.

With their blond heads side by side, I could almost image Sam to be Aiden’s biological father, but of course, neither of us was. I looked nothing like either of them, sporting dark brown hair and brown eyes.

RainbowFor today’s snippet I’m going back to From This Day Forward, a short story coming out in ebook format on August 6th.

For context, Henry and Sam have recently arrived at the home of their adoptive son Buddy/Aiden’s paternal birth-grandparents (Anton & Rosa), where the little boy has just had his first overnight visit. In the news that morning were some particularly terrible accusations from a right-wing activist. Aiden’s grandparents have just brought up that topic. This is told from Henry’s 1st-person POV.

How Sam managed to keep such a calm tone was a mystery to me. His leg stopped bouncing, and the hand he placed on my knee, applying light pressure, told me he knew how agitated my own emotions were.

Anton said, “We’re a little concerned.”

“You don’t seriously believe that fool, do you?” I fought to keep my volume under control, and Sam’s hand kept my body seated. Without it, I would’ve jumped up.

This is another Adventures with Harrison and Mason short scene.

“Think we should follow it, Jaxon?” Mason asked. “I’ll bet they’re on their way to feed King Kong.”

Jaxon perked up in the backseat. “How did they get such a big banana?”

“Imagine how tall the tree must be,” Harrison said. He loved the way Mason stoked Jaxon’s imagination, but try as he might, he was no match for his husband in that department.

“No,” Mason said. “On second thought, I think it’s a normal sized tree.”

“Huh?” Jaxon said, mirroring Harrison’s thoughts.

“Something happened last night. Everything in the world shrunk except that banana.”

Jaxon laughed. “An evil wizard!”

My contribution is Okay, Then, a very short story set in the timeline of the flashback scenes from ’Til Death Do Us Part, chronicling Sam & Henry’s first date while on a research trip together in the Solomon Islands.

This is from Henry’s 1st-person POV:

At the landing where I would turn left, and Sam would turn right, we paused, and Sam said, “Your shower or mine?”

He said it awkwardly as hell, and his face turned beet red, but I think the smile that split my face reassured him, because his grin emerged.

“Wherever you’ll be more comfortable.” I gave his hand an overdue press.

“Mine,” he replied without hesitation.

“Okay, then.” My words echoed his from our conversation yesterday, and his grin widened, perhaps remembering that himself.

I followed Sam to his room. Like mine it was in the older, cheaper wing of the hotel. The air conditioning worked, and there was running water. Those were about the best things I could say about our rooms. The bedding was clean, although the mattresses might be older than me. I supposed the painted cinderblock walls and tile floors were relatively easy to keep clean. The plumbing fixtures were ancient but functional. Housekeeping wasn’t overly concerned about mildew control.

From my short story, Okay, Then. For context, Henry and Sam have placed an order at the Mambo Juice in Honiara in the Solomon Islands. Sam has order a Vegemite and cheese toasted sandwich. Being from the US, this is not something they have experience eating in the past. This snippet is from Henry’s 1st-person POV, and Henry is the first speaker. “He” is Sam:

I stabbed a fork into my salad and watched with morbid curiosity as he bit into his sandwich. He grinned mischievously and took an extra-large bite.

“So?”

“It’s not bad.”

“That’s not exactly a glowing recommendation.”

He laughed. “That’s a figure of speech. I kinda like it.” He held it out to me, waving it slowly back and forth. “Try it.”

“Seriously, it’s not a big deal. If I can’t handle one little mile, then I’m a pretty sad case with no business attempting field work.”

He cocked his head slightly to the side and stared curiously at me as I attempted a reassuring smile. His stance relaxed.

“You’re…” He abruptly cut off whatever he was going to say. His eyes widened and I got the distinct impression he’d been thinking aloud, and hadn’t meant to say anything.

This is another Adventures with Harrison and Mason short scene.

Mason placed a hand on Harrison’s head and eased the two of them a bit to the side in the shower stall so the hot water from the new rain-showerhead wouldn’t cascade directly over their faces. The recent plumbing upgrade had been Harrison’s Father’s Day gift to Mason.

When the kiss broke, Mason groaned and reached for his husband.

“Shhh.” Harrison’s shush was accompanied by a giggle. “Don’t wake Jaxon.”

“Don’t worry,” Mason whispered. “Just checked. He’s out cold.”

Harrison grinned and reached for the shower gel. He waggled his eyebrows and started soaping Mason’s chest.

Best gift idea ever.

In honor of the upcoming print release of ’Til Death Do Us Part, here is a snippet from that novel. Context not needed, snippet told from Henry’s 3rd-person POV:

“They’re very tolerant of flooding,” Sam said, continuing an earlier conversation they’d been having about mangoes. “Up to fifty days even. The trees develop these hypertrophic lenticels…”

Henry silenced Sam at that point with a kiss. Henry’s infatuation with Sam had blossomed and expanded during their time on the islands, but even so, he had to admit his lover’s pillow talk left a little bit to be desired.

Henry could feel Sam’s smile beneath his lips as the kiss ended.

“I was wondering what it would take to get a reaction out of you,” Sam said.

Henry groaned. “What? You mean all that jabbering was just to see what I’d do?”

“It worked.”

“You know, if you want me to kiss you, you can just ask.”

“Where’s the fun in that?”

There was really no point in arguing with “Sam logic.” And kissing him again was more fun anyway.

This link will take you to a post including a list of this week’s participants.

In honor of its upcoming print release, here are ten sentences from ’Til Death Do Us Part. For context, Military Police have just paid a visit to Sam. Introductions have been made, and they are explaining the purpose of their visit to Sam:

Major Johnson continued. “Some people were spotted on a remote and insignificant island. They were determined through initial surveillance to be stranded there. When the drone descended to make itself known, the individuals communicated with it by writing in the sand. They identified themselves as survivors of the TransOceanic Flight 3012 plane crash and wrote out their names.”

Sam sat rigidly and held his breath as Major Johnson paused. Survivors? Could it really be possible? These men wouldn’t be here making a personal visit to inform him, would they, unless…?

“Dr. Miller-Greene, we’d appreciate it if you would give a positive identification of the man who indicated he was your husband, Henry.”

Here are ten lines from ’Til Death Do Us Part, in honor of the upcoming print release. For context, Military Police have paid Sam Miller-Green an unexpected visit. Sam’s fiancé let them in, and Sam has already introduced himself. This is from Sam’s 3rd-person POV:

The man with the round face and warm brown eyes spoke. “I’m Major Johnson and this is Sergeant Rosings.” Sam nodded and they all shook hands. “May we all sit at your table here, Dr. Miller-Greene? We have some images to show you, and I think you’ll find this news rather unsettling.”

Sam felt the blood drain from his face. Unsettling. That sounded like it might be a softer way of saying awful. He took a deep breath and asked, “May my fiancé join us? I get the feeling I’m going to want the moral support.”

Rainbow Snippets – June 25, 2016

I’ve joined the Rainbow Snippets group on Facebook. From their description: “Rainbow Snippets is a group for LGBTQ+ authors, readers, and bloggers to gather once a week to share six sentences from a work of fiction–a WIP or a finished work or even a 6-sentence book recommendation (no spoilers please!).” Pretty cool, eh? Don’t forget to “Like” my Facebook page and/or my Facebook profile while you’re over there checking out this fantastic group!

Since the print release for ’Til Death Do Us Part is this coming Thursday I’ll give another snippet from that story.

For context, Sam was in the kitchen finishing up dinner preparations when his fiancé, Nash, appeared in the doorway to inform him that Military Police were at the door asking for him. This is from Sam’s 3rd-person POV:

Sam’s eyes widened. Why on earth would military police need to talk to him? Even if some piece of that fucking, fucking airplane had washed up at this late date, he doubted family would be pointedly notified, let alone paid a personal visit. No, it couldn’t have anything to do with that old tragedy.

“I guess there’s only one way to find out.” He straightened his shoulders and walked to the living room.

Snippets shortly following the above will be posted tomorrow on my Sunday Snippet post and my Weekend Writing Warriors post.

Flash Fiction Friday – June 24, 2016

Flash Fiction Friday

Flash Fiction: There isn’t a standard specific definition for this term beyond “extremely short”, but for the purposes of my “Flash Fiction Friday” posts it will mean a precisely 100-word story scene (aka “Drabble”) written from a photo prompt.

Today’s prompt picture is:

This is another Adventures with Harrison and Mason short scene.

“Daddy, how do you think it got up there?” Jaxon asked.

Harrison cocked his head to the side. “Maybe someone parked in the field and two trees grew up around it?”

Jaxon rolled his eyes. “Pop, what’s your idea?”

Mason grinned. “I think someone set up a catapult and launched the truck, and it landed right there in the trees.”

Jaxon nodded his approval. “Wanna know what I think?”

“Absolutely,” Harrison replied. “See if you can out-silly Pop.”

Jaxon’s smirk looked a lot like Mason’s. “Maybe the giant who left those footprints a couple weeks ago lifted it up there.”

If anyone would like to join me in a Flash Fiction Friday link-around, I’ve started posting a preview of the image early in the week, with instructions.
