Below are the (unedited) opening lines from my (almost complete) WiP titled To Love and To Cherish. A blurb is still pending, but here’s a short tag line:

Will Nash find love again? Of course he will. Will he go about it in the usual way? Now that’s another story entirely.

The elderly man shifted in the wheelchair, and Nash Marino reached down to tuck in the loose blanket around his patient. He glanced up as the elevator stopped, then blinked and stiffened a bit when he saw a familiar figure from his recent past step into the elevator. Not that he had anything against Truman Greene—he’d always enjoyed the company of this man and his entire family. In fact, he missed them. A lot.

It wasn’t Truman’s fault things had gone so wrong between Nash and the man’s son. Hell, it wasn’t anybody’s fault. That was one of the things that pissed Nash off the most about the whole situation. He couldn’t reasonably be angry at anyone involved, not without looking like a jackass. He was definitely more than a little peeved at fate, however.

Revisiting the characters from ’Til Death Do Us Part, Henry and Sam Miller-Greene are enjoying life in the summer after Henry’s rescue from a small South Pacific island, where Henry and three others were marooned.

Henry and Sam thought adopting Aiden—a child with whom Henry’d been stranded—would be smooth sailing. Matters are complicated by the public nature of their rescue that has turned the survivors into overnight celebrities. Anti-gay fueled animus rears its ugly head in the blogosphere, causing concerns over the impact libelous rumors might have on Aiden.

Their nightmare separation behind them, Henry and Sam are anxious to renew both the intensity of their former intimacies—now hampered by having a curious and still apprehensive child sharing their home—and their commitment to one another.

Here are 143 words from my upcoming short story, From This Day Forward.

Context isn’t really needed. This is from Henry’s 1st-person POV:

I burrowed my face into Sam’s neck and enjoyed the warmth and strength of his arms. We rocked together for a few moments, then I pulled away from his neck and angled up my face. He took the hint, and his mouth covered mine, softly teasing, his lips caressing, then adding firm pressure as his tongue skimmed my lips and tenderly pushed past. I reveled in the intoxicating mix of sensations—the salty taste of Sam’s skin, the coarse caress of unshaven skin brushing my cheek, and his natural fragrance. Forgotten for five long years, I was now hyper-aware of his intoxicating musk.

A lovely, barely perceptible tremor stirred beneath my hands as they progressed up Sam’s back, applying pressure, gently kneading. His hands cupped my face, and I hooked my arms to grip his shoulders from behind. Muscles flexed beneath my palms.

The next scheduled release that I’m participating in is the Love Is Proud charity anthology by JMS Books authors. My contribution is Okay, Then, a very short story set in the timeline of the flashback scenes from ’Til Death Do Us Part, chronicling Sam & Henry’s first date while on a research trip together in the Solomon Islands.

This is from Henry’s 1st-person POV:

At the landing where I would turn left, and Sam would turn right, we paused, and Sam said, “Your shower or mine?”

He said it awkwardly as hell, and his face turned beet red, but I think the smile that split my face reassured him, because his grin emerged.

“Wherever you’ll be more comfortable.” I gave his hand an overdue press.

“Mine,” he replied without hesitation.

“Okay, then.” My words echoed his from our conversation yesterday, and his grin widened, perhaps remembering that himself.

I followed Sam to his room. Like mine it was in the older, cheaper wing of the hotel. The air conditioning worked, and there was running water. Those were about the best things I could say about our rooms. The bedding was clean, although the mattresses might be older than me. I supposed the painted cinderblock walls and tile floors were relatively easy to keep clean. The plumbing fixtures were ancient but functional. Housekeeping wasn’t overly concerned about mildew control.

In honor of the upcoming print release of ’Til Death Do Us Part, here is a snippet from that novel. Context not needed, snippet told from Henry’s 3rd-person POV:

“They’re very tolerant of flooding,” Sam said, continuing an earlier conversation they’d been having about mangoes. “Up to fifty days even. The trees develop these hypertrophic lenticels…”

Henry silenced Sam at that point with a kiss. Henry’s infatuation with Sam had blossomed and expanded during their time on the islands, but even so, he had to admit his lover’s pillow talk left a little bit to be desired.

Henry could feel Sam’s smile beneath his lips as the kiss ended.

“I was wondering what it would take to get a reaction out of you,” Sam said.

Henry groaned. “What? You mean all that jabbering was just to see what I’d do?”

“It worked.”

“You know, if you want me to kiss you, you can just ask.”

“Where’s the fun in that?”

There was really no point in arguing with “Sam logic.” And kissing him again was more fun anyway.

This week I’m going to give you 157 words from Dreaming of You, the third story in my Dreams TrilogyDreaming of You is a novelette length story originally published at eXcessica before being incorporated into the trilogy when the contracts for the first two books in the collection expired.

This excerpt follows immediately after the one I posted last week, in which Quinn approached Trevor at a bar and struck up a conversation.

“Trevor choked. And sputtered. Was Quinn obtuse? He certainly had some big hairy balls.

“What are you, insane as well as a liar? Leave me the hell alone. You’ve done enough damage.”

Trevor turned back to his beer, determined to simply ignore Quinn until the man left. Except Quinn didn’t leave. He settled in with a beer of his own and then had the nerve to bring up the issue himself.

“So you have a thing for that Marty fella, don’t you?”

“Fuck off.”

“What, you don’t want to fuck me anymore?”

Christ. “Leave me the hell alone, Quinn.”

“I hate to be the bearer of bad news, Trevor, but Marty loves that Larry dude. Larry’s a nice enough little guy. They seem like a pretty sweet couple to me.”

That was too much. Trevor spun to face Quinn. “That why you made out with the little cheater in the restroom then lied to Marty about it?”

Dreaming of You – Blurb

Trevor’s upset when the man he’s been chasing for years chooses another. He’d come to terms with losing Marty, but his hopes had been recently renewed and freshly dashed. While he’s trying to drown his sorrows, the man he considers to be the cause of his distress approaches him.

When Quinn startles Trevor with an insightful revelation, will Trevor be able to put aside their differences and give love another chance?

This week I’m going to give you 122 words from Dreaming of You, the third story in my Dreams TrilogyDreaming of You is a novelette length story originally published at eXcessica before being incorporated into the trilogy once the contracts for the first two books in the trilogy expired.

In this little excerpt Trevor is sitting at a bar when he’s approached by Quinn, a man who’d contributed to the end of Trevor’s dreams at the end of book 2 in the trilogy.

“Hey there.” The voice was irritatingly cheerful. “Trevor, isn’t it?”

“Fuck you, Quinn.”

Trevor didn’t bother turning to look at the man but could sense his continued presence. Fuck. Most men would know enough to leave someone the hell alone after a greeting like that, but not Quinn. Fuck no. Fucking cowboy just stood there.

Scratch that. He sat down on the next barstool.

“Well now, I guess I could take it as a good sign that you know my name.”

Christ. Trevor turned to level a scorching look at his new arch enemy. “And do you take the ‘fuck you’ as a good sign too—Quinn?”

Quinn had the audacity to look puzzled but grinned through it. “Was it a request?”

This week I’m going to give you 155 words from the opening scene of Dropping Quarters, a short story that was originally published as a Torquere Press SIP back in 2008, then after the contract expired, I reworked it a little and self-published the 2nd edition in 2009.

“No masturbating.” The sign on the door of the little room actually said that. Yeah, right. So why did the adult video arcade’s management keep a box of Kleenex in the room? To clean off the screen? Luke supposed the screen might actually need to be cleaned off after a client left the room, but only because he’d been jacking off.

The numerous sticky tissue wads on the floor either meant he wasn’t the only one completely ignoring the rule, or the clients in the room before him probably should have stayed home in bed with a humidifier cranked all the way up. Luke’s money was on the former.

Is that a roll of quarters in your pocket or are you happy to see me? Luke couldn’t help thinking of the mind-numbingly inane line as he pulled the roll out of his pocket. He cracked open the roll and dropped a quarter into the machine.

This week I’m going to give you 188 words (slightly over the preferred range) from a short story I just finished (it’s currently in the hands of beta readers) titled, From This Day Forward. This snippet is told from Henry’s 1st-person POV:

When I awoke, my legs were warmer than the rest of my body due to a sunbeam spreading across the bottom half of the double bed we’d shared. Sam no longer lay beside me, and I heard the soft thunk of a coffee mug landing on the table from the other room.

I closed my eyes again and pulled Sam’s pillow to my chest, breathing in the lingering scent. Last night had been perfect. Relaxed, uninhibited, and wanton, followed by a restful picnic supper by the creek, and the most peaceful night of sleep I’d had in a long, long, time. I rolled out of bed and hurried through my morning necessaries, then walked out to join him.

Sam’s face was tight as he glanced back and forth between his iPad, lying on the table, and his iPhone, which he held in his hands, furiously texting away. Fuck, I was so tired of all the bullshit that came with being a pseudo-celebrity. It seemed as if nothing was our private business anymore. I assumed whatever Sam was dealing with was related to that—it usually was these days.

This week I’m going to give you a snippet from my recent release at JMS Books, ’Til Death Do Us Part.

“Sam knocked lightly on the jamb of the open doorway to Henry’s office. Henry looked up and grinned.

“Hey, come on in. What’s up?”

“My family wants to meet you.”

Henry put down the red pen he’d been holding and set aside the stack of homework papers he’d been grading. Family? Unlike his own family, Henry knew Sam’s parents were accepting of their son’s sexuality, but would that really extend to acceptance of his boyfriend?

“Yikes.”

“Yikes?”

“I figured that would go over better than ‘oh, shit.’”
Sam coughed nervously as he looked out the open window, avoiding Henry’s eye. “So, you don’t want to?”

“I didn’t say that,” he said quickly. “Look at me, Sam. Please?”
Sam turned his gaze back to Henry. “So you will?”

“I’m just nervous. You know how things are with my family, right?”

“Sure, but I’ve told you mine isn’t like that.”

“I know. Maybe it’s one of those irrational fears. Me and meeting families is like you and flying on airplanes.”

Sam snickered. “Okay, okay. I get it. Remember, though, I don’t let it actually keep me from flying.”

Henry sighed with faux drama, bringing up a hand to clutch his nonexistent pearls. “Just say when, and I’ll be there.”

For my bright and shiny very first Seductive Studs post, I’ll post an excerpt from a WIP that’s tentatively titled To Love and To Cherish. It’s a spin-off story for Nash, the jilted fiancé from my recent release at JMS Books, ’Til Death Do Us Part.

A little background to give this excerpt some context: Nash has been sleeping on a couch in the apartment of his best friend Harley (and Harley’s boyfriend, Oliver) since the breakup with his fiancé. Harley set up a blind date for Nash, and Nash is arriving home after the date has ended.

Nash turned the key in the door and edged it open carefully. He heard the TV going, but that didn’t necessarily rule out the possibility he’d be interrupting something he didn’t want to see.

“It’s safe,” Harley called out, and Nash pushed the door open the rest of the way and entered the apartment.

Harley and Oliver looked innocent enough lounging on the couch with their feet up on the coffee table, but eau de “Mediterranean Lavender” still lingered, and he could hear the washing machine churning away down the hallway, adding a hint of bleach to the atmosphere.

“Towel load?” he asked, since they didn’t actually own a tarp.

Oliver’s face turned a becoming rosy shade, and Harley snickered. “Shut up. Sit down and tell us about the date.”

“There won’t be a second one. ’Nuff said.”

Oh, dear. It doesn’t appear that Nash’s luck has changed for the better yet.
