#RainbowSnippets July 22, 2017 – To Love and To Cherish (Vows Box Set)

I’ve joined the Rainbow Snippets group on Facebook. From their description: “Rainbow Snippets is a group for LGBTQ+ authors, readers, and bloggers to gather once a week to share six sentences from a work of fiction–a WIP or a finished work or even a 6-sentence book recommendation (no spoilers please!).” Pretty cool, eh? Don’t forget to “Like” my Facebook page and/or my Facebook profile while you’re over there checking out this fantastic group!

In honor of the release of the Vows Series Box Set, I’m going with another snippet from To Love and To Cherish (the final story in the set). The box set is up exclusively at Amazon.

This snippet follows immediately after where I left off last week. Nash has come home to face his roommates (Harley and Oliver), and he’s scrabbling to find a way to tell them about the arrangement he’s just made with Emmitt (a marriage of convenience). He’s afraid of what their reaction might be so he’s trying to head that off by redirecting the conversation to their own relationship.

Last week ended with:

Harley pointed a finger at [Oliver]. “Don’t put this all on me. You’re just as capable of asking as I am.”

This is told from Nash’s 3rd-person POV (although Harley and Oliver are the only players in this scene):

“Oliver had the decency to blush. “Okay, I guess that’s a fair point, but you’re the one still insisting we keep waiting.”

“Don’t put words in my mouth.”

“What? That’s pretty much what you just said.”

“I was explaining why we hadn’t, not insisting that we shouldn’t.”

Oliver pinched his lips and placed his hands on his hips. “So?”

“So what?” Harley asked.

“Do you want to get married?”

In honor of the release of the Vows Series Box Set, I’m going with another snippet from To Love and To Cherish (the final story in the set). The box set is up exclusively at Amazon. With the collection (2 novels, a novelette, and a short story) coming in at over 147,000 words, it’s a steal at only $6.99! (PSSSST…Watch for a very special Kindle Select deal for this collection on Monday, July 17th)

This snippet is unrelated to last week’s racy excerpt (continuing would have been a tad bit too steamy for a blog post). It picks up just a little later in the story when Nash comes home to face his roommates (Harley and Oliver), and he’s scrabbling to find a way to tell them about the arrangement he’s just made with Emmitt (a marriage of convenience). He’s afraid of what their reaction might be so he’s trying to head that off. This is told from Nash’s 3rd-person POV:

“I had this whole conversation with Angela the other day,” Nash said. “About how quickly we’d known in our hearts that a relationship ultimately wouldn’t work, but stuck it out anyway because we’d hope things would work out. But when we’d met someone who was a great match for us, we’d known that just as fast. Admit it, you know right now that you’re going to marry Oliver in the end. You’re just holding out for bullshit reasons.”

“I don’t know that I’d call them bullshit reasons,” Harley blustered.

“What would you call them?” Oliver asked.

Harley pointed a finger at him. “Don’t put this all on me. You’re just as capable of asking as I am.”

In honor of the release of the Vows Series Box Set, I’m going with a steamy snippet from To Love and To Cherish (the final story in the set). The box set should be up at Amazon some time this weekend. With the collection (2 novels, a novelette, and a short story) coming in at over 147,000 words, it’s a steal at only $6.99!

No story context needed for this scene. This is told from Nash’s 3rd-person POV:

Nash brought his feet up to the edge and slid his body forward, then hooked his knees over Emmitt’s shoulders. He arched luxuriously, gripping the far edge of the island and peered back toward the windows. He peeked at the outside world before returning his attention forward as Emmitt meticulously prepared him.

It was the sexiest fucking thing Nash had ever experienced. Emmitt was as focused, careful, and systematic as Nash remembered from working with him in the OR. Emmitt might not have had any experience preparing another man for anal penetration, but he’d for darned sure studied it.

Some people had fun with sexy doctor-nurse roleplaying. Nash was getting the real thing.

Today I’m giving another 6 lines from my rewritten and expanded 2nd edition of Cultivating Love. I’m picking up directly where I left off last week with the lines:

[Joe] “Not a problem. It’s my turn, by the way.”

[Ed] “Is not.”

This is told from Ed’s 3rd-person POV:

“Ed loaded the brush with grease-removing hand soap and started scrubbing. He yelped when Joe slapped his ass, and attempted a scowl—though it better resembled a leer—at Joe’s self-assured grin reflecting back at him.

“Is too.”

“You have to fix dinner then.” Ed’s stab at a hardline mien wasn’t any more successful than his glower.

Joe snickered again, turning away.

A man of few words, Joe is a hard-working farmhand who likes his simple, uncomplicated life. Ed is satisfied with his existence as an auto mechanic, but thrilled when an unexpected development in his life allows him to help Joe realize a dream.

It forces them, however, to reevaluate the casual, undefined nature of their relationship. They’re too macho to speak of love, and neither would acknowledge he doesn’t really mind when it’s his turn to bottom. When life throws them a curve ball, and the rules of their game get old, Ed tries to take every aspect of their relationship up a notch. Can Joe adapt to the open sentimentality Ed’s injecting into their relationship, let alone the new spice in their bedroom activities?

This is a previously published story that has been rewritten, expanded, and re-edited.

WooHoo! It’s release day for my rewritten and expanded 2nd edition of Cultivating Love at JMS Books, LLC, so of course I’m snipping from that 😀. Sorry, I’m slightly over on sentence count, but several of them are only two words long. No context needed. This is told from Ed’s 3rd-person POV:

Ed’s breath caught in his throat as he watched the flex of Joe’s back muscles. Back, ass, hamstrings, arms—hell—all of him. The potent effect of Joe’s nakedness on his libido never ceased to amaze him.

Ed picked up the nail brush and casually turned on the water at the sink. “Don’t bother getting dressed.”

Joe hooted. His hazel eyes gleamed at Ed in the mirror. “Not a problem. It’s my turn, by the way.”

“Is not.”

On June 24th I’ll be releasing a rewritten and expanded 2nd edition of Cultivating Love at JMS Books, LLC. Today’s snippet picks up from where I left off last week. For context, this scene takes place shortly after Joe leaves to take care of the farm Ed has inherited while Ed stays behind to take care of closing their existing lease and getting them moved. The guys aren’t sure, yet, how long they’ll be separated. This is told from Ed’s 3rd-person POV:

This was way past the level where either of them could just walk away at the drop of a hat if they had a big argument. But that was good, wasn’t it? Joe had agreed they were partners and had been over-the-moon happy looking over the farm. If nothing else, he had Joe hooked with the farm.

His head ached, and he didn’t want to think about it anymore. He scrubbed his face with his palms and padded back to his lonely bed.

To hell with it. There were no witnesses, so he gave in and let go. Wet trails streamed down his face. How or when had it come to this? He bit his lip, salty with tears, and snuffled. What were they getting themselves into?

On June 24th I’ll be releasing a rewritten and expanded 2nd edition of Cultivating Love at JMS Books, LLC (You can still get the 1st edition through Loose ID probably through June 8 or 9). This snippet is from one of the new scenes that takes place about 1/3 of the way into the story and picks up where I left off last week. It’s unedited at this point, and is told from Ed’s 3rd-person POV. For those familiar with the story, this bit takes place on Ed’s way back home after his first encounter with Stan at the Farm & Feed store. Ed has stopped by the accident site where his father was killed:

What thoughts had flashed through his mind during those final ticks of his life? Happy memories? Regrets? He’d probably thought of Bill. Had he spared a flash of an instant to think of the son he’d never met?

Ed’s chin trembled, and he felt chilled despite the sun beating down. He sniffed, and turned back to the truck.

The wind blew through Ed’s hair and rippled his shirt. His shoulders drooped as he slowly pivoted in place. This was where his father—a man he’d never met, but who’d apparently cared for him on some level—had taken his last breath. He’d died instantly. That’s what the reports said. His neck had been broken in the crash. How truly immediate was “instantly”? Was the word overused? Had there been a moment or two of fade-to-black, knowing he was dying? No doubt he’d had a few seconds leading up to that where he’d known he was likely to be injured, at the very least.

Presumably, his father had traveled this road frequently. Had he used the motorcycle often? Often enough to be familiar with the terrain from that perspective—to be aware of things that might not stand out when driving a large pickup truck? How big would a hole need to be to cause a motorcycle to wipe out? Hell, there could have been any number of factors. Distracted by a cat, a dog, a rabbit—whatever. He could have been daydreaming rather than paying as close attention as he should have done. There didn’t necessarily need to have been a hole at all.
