Divine Promotions was sad to hear of the passing of Mary Lynn Hansel aka A.C. Katt. As both a friend and a wonderful author, she will be sadly missed. We decided we wanted to do one last tribute to her memory so we are doing this tour to honor her and the stories she wrote.

Sadly, I’ve only known Mary Lynn for a little over a year. I’ll never forget our meeting. It was my first time at GRL and I was running around to various author’s tables, hustling and trying to introduce myself as a narrator (good cardio, by the way). A silver-haired firecracker was (literally) wheeled up to me, by her husband, and said “I need to talk to you.” When I asked her how long she had been writing m/m romance she said… “oh a couple years.” From that moment forward, to all my friends, I dubbed her Jessica Fletcher and we affectionately imagined her as the star of her own series, “Porn She Wrote.”  Even now, as I’m narrating one of her books as I write this, it makes me giggle like a school girl thinking of classy, stately Mary Lynn conjuring up very steamy scenarios on her laptop.  She was Rose Nyland with the mind of Blanche Devareux.

That she came to publishing later in her life was inspiring…the fact that she had no qualms about expressing herself in a sensual, sexual and steamy way is an inspiration that I hope we can all carry into our golden years. Before I knew I would be working with her, I sat in on one of her panels at GRL when she spoke with taciturn candor about writing “the BDS and M.” If Mary Lynn had ever recorded youtube videos I swear she would have become a gay icon up there with Little Edie and Maggie Smith’s Dowager Countess. “Who are you going to be for Halloween?” “Duh, gurl, AC Katt.”

As a narrator, she was a dream to work with. Whenever I have the chance to work closely with my authors, I give them ‘homework’… a list of questions I ask about each character that helps me get into the author’s imagination.  Mary Lynn took her homework deadly seriously – she would have it back to me in a flash and it was incredibly well thought out.  In fact, I use her homework as an example for new authors I’m working with. But the thing I came to realize, (I am recording book three of Werewolves of Manhattan at the moment), was that she HEARD her characters. More than almost any other author I’ve worked with, she could tell me exactly who these characters were. For a recurring nebishy detective, she just said, “I based him on Peter Falk in Columbo.” Could a narrator have a better guide?!!

Even MORE wonderful for a narrator – she seemed to aurally plan her series out (even though she had no idea audio would be happening for the books when she started). The hardest thing for a narrator is to take on what I call an ‘additive series.’ This is where the characters from each previous book recur, but a new romantic couple is added on as the focus. So, you end up with a growing pile of characters… all of whom have to sound different somehow.  A lot of times, an author will write a recurring cavalcade of alpha males and I will end up begging for one of them to be from somewhere different to help the listener differentiate between ‘stud muffin #456’ and ‘special ops guy #753.’ With Mary Lynn, she (inexplicably) planned this out. She gave me a French alpha, and then a French-Canadian alpha, and then from Minnesota, then Atlanta paired with Omegas from Ireland and Russia.  It not only makes my job easier… it makes it fun. She didn’t write her books, she HEARD her books… and that’s the highest compliment I can pay an author. I am honored to continue her legacy and raise a Coke Zero (all her werewolves drink Coke Zero) high in her honor.
