“The Emperor cares for each and every one of his subjects.”
Many consider the catchphrase of the imperial Lotus Knights to be nothing more but well-polished propaganda, but for Yaden, it is a way of life.
A young Lotus Knight himself, his first mission in service of the Emperor sends him to the remote village of Hagermarsh, a suspiciously friendly place on a planet known for its inhospitable people. But how to uncover a demonist coven when nothing bad ever happens? Getting to know the villagers only complicates things – the motherly fishmonger surely isn’t a demonist. Nor the gruff leader of the local militia. And definitely not the cute baker from across the street.
Or are they?
Come discover a dazzling, hopeful universe of knights and monsters, of psions, aliens and ancient deities! The Demon of Hagermarsh is the first book of ‘Sir Yaden’, an epic SF saga of grand adventure, romance, bromance and family, set in the multi-faceted Virasana Empire. It is a romantic adventure and can be read as a standalone.
☆ Character Interview ☆
Welcome to another QuestLog interview. This time with the latest addition to the Good Emperor’s fabulous Lotus Knights, the young Sir Yaden who joined us here today.
Sir Yaden, you’re the new Lotus Knight in the Service of the Emperor. For the few people who’ve been living under a rock the last two-hundred years, could you tell us a little bit about your job?
You really think there is people who don’t know what a Lotus Knight does? I mean, there’s movies about my colleagues! But of course I’ll try. The Lotus Knights – well, we – are tasked by the Emperor to resolve extraordinary problems that other people just can’t work on. Stuff like weird mystical beasts, unexplainable occurrences, natural disasters. Unlike others, the Order of Knights has specialists for these things.
Tell us a bit about your home world – you’re from Erys, right? That’s pretty much on the fringe of Quetzal space, and most of our readers will have hardly heard about it. What’s there to know about your home planet, and what do you like best about it?
Erys is beautiful – the wild, unpredictable weather and the volcanoes, nothing is ever really the same. Though I can see how many people won’t think of that as a good thing. You know, the planet’s climate and crust are pretty unstable because the terraforming was botched, or maybe aborted, no one knows for sure. I can feel that Erys is not right, she has spasms and throws up… You know, like someone in deep pain. But I know she doesn’t want to hurt anyone, she’s very kind, and nice, and a really good friend of mine. *laughs* Sorry if that weirded you out.
But one other thing I particularly like about Erys are the people living there. We have a very strong sense of community due to the frequent natural disasters, and it carries into each aspect of life. It’s quite different to what you get here in the heart of the Empire.
You said you can ‘feel’ Erys, and other planets. That’s because you’re a psion, right? And from what we hear, a pretty strong one. You could have taken a highly paid position within the psions guild – why take an oath with the Emperor?
As you can imagine, my powers were desperately needed every day back home on Erys. Only over the last years, the planet has calmed down sufficiently to even allow me to think about moving elsewhere. So, you can see it needed a pretty good reason to make me stop having an eye out on everyone back at home and leave my planet. And money alone just wasn’t good enough. I think right now, I can do more good with my powers travelling all across the empire instead of sitting at home, so here I am. And besides – can I say that here? – I don’t really like the psions guild. We had a bad start, the guild and I, when my powers first manifested. They still haven’t figured out why my powers are working so differently.
There’s a book coming out about your first mission in the service of the Emperor, called ‘The Demon of Hagermarsh’. So they sent you to Leichnam, of all places. Honestly, most people only know the place for exporting slug ham and terrorists. How bad is it really?
Horrible? Depressive? *laughs* No, really. The people are horrible, especially considering where I come from. They are a hostile lot, grim, rarely speak a word and they really don’t like strangers. If they do communicate, it’s mostly meaningful grunts. It felt so alien to me, and yet they were all humans. Did I mention how distrustful they are?
But it’s only the people, really. The planet itself has a genuinely nice personality, happy and quiet, like a sleeping animal.
Oh wow, that sounds like a nasty place. But still, from what I hear, you did find some romance while on your mission. Now how did that happen?
Actually, I am not really sure how that happened. There was this charming baker right across the street, and he was so sweet. Colin started flirting with me and took me crab gathering one afternoon… Admittedly, I am not sure what he sees in me. But as he didn’t know at that time that I was a Lotus Knight, he seems to genuinely like me, and that is pretty awesome. Because I like him too. A lot.
Can we expect a big announcement soon? Will there be wedding bells ringing in the capital?
Oh my God. Oh. Well. I think we need a bit more time. We’re still figuring this out. I mean, Colin got more than his share of the demon business and is still shell-shocked by what happened in Hagermarsh.
What’s in store for us in the future? Will we see you fight more demons? Or will you focus on humanitarian relief missions?
I hope it’s lots of humanitarian relief missions, because honestly I don’t think I am good at that demon stuff. Looking back at my time in Hagermarsh, I cringe at all the things I could have done so much better; I still have so much to learn. But I’ll do my best, every time, where ever his Majesty sends me.
Spoken like a true Lotus Knight. Thank you, Sir Yaden, for this little interview, and we’re very much looking forward to talking to you again after your next adventure!
Meet the Authors
We are Beryll and Osiris Brackhaus, a couple currently living our happily ever after in the very heart of Germany, under the stern but loving surveillance of our cat.
Both of us are voracious but picky readers, we love telling stories and drinking tea, good food and the occasional violent movie. Together, we write novels of adventure and romance, hoping to share a little of our happiness with our readers.
Beryll: An artist by heart, Beryll was writing stories even before she knew what letters were. As easily inspired as she is frustrated, her own work is never good enough (in her eyes). A perfectionist in the best and worst sense of the word at the same time and the driving creative force of our duo.
Osiris: An entertainer and craftsman in his approach to writing, Osiris is the down-to-earth, practical part of our duo. Broadly interested in almost every subject and skill, with a sunny mood and caring personality, he strives to bring the human nature into focus of each of his stories.
