Excerpt from Starting His Engine
Garrison didnβt say anything until Joan and Earl left the room. Caleb moved closer and hugged his brother. βGlad youβre okay, man.β
βThanks. Whatβs in the paper bag?β
βClothes. I figured you needed to borrow a fresh shirt and shorts. Joan suggested I stop by your place and get you some clean clothes, but I wanted to come over right away without stopping at New Smyrna so I just grabbed you some of my clothes.β
Caleb handed the bag to Garrison who peered inside.
βWhatβs this?β He lifted a pink muscle tank top. βHoly shit! Iβm not wearing this!β
βWhat about the shorts I brought?β
Garrison took out the blue shorts and eyed them. βThese are girlβs shorts.β
βNo. Theyβre male shorts, just a really, really, really short pair, meant to highlight posterior assets.β
βIβm not wearing these. My balls would be hanging out of them!β
Caleb snorted while Garrison threw the clothes at him. βYouβre never appreciative of the things I do for you.β
Garrison mouthed the word asshole and then laughed.
βDid you expect anything less?β
βI guess not, little brother. Where have you been, by the way? Youβve been MIA for like two to three weeks.β
βDad and I, well, I donβt know how to explain it,β said Caleb.
βJoan told me. She said dad wants Youngblood racing to focus on one driver for marketing and endorsements.β
βI guess thatβs one way to put it,β said Caleb as he walked toward the window. βI asked him why, you know. He said he didnβt have to explain himself. Thatβs when I told him I didnβt want to ever talk to him again.β
βDramatic much?β laughed Garr.
Caleb turned away from the window and sat next to Garr. βIf he never wanted me to race the majors, why would he even let me drive period?β
βI donβt think we ever had a choice did we? I mean this is the family business. At least I didnβt have a choice — not like Iβd want to do anything else. But you? You shouldnβt have dropped out of college. I know you came back because of Mom.β Garr patted Calebβs thigh. βIβll talk to Dad and see if I can talk some sense into him. I donβt know whatβs going on lately. I know Joan and he like to keep the business side of things to themselves, but we all need to know why Dad is doing what Dad is doing.β
βYouβre the better driver, Garr.β Caleb paused. βIf he just came out and said, weβre going with Garrison because heβs the better, Iβm fine with that. But to just say, Iβm not racing anymore, especially the majors? Iβm not ten years old. Dad should just give me the reasons why, not just say, Iβm out. Iβm done.β
They both sat in silence for a moment before Garrison spoke. βSo what have you been doing lately? Bob says you show up in the shop and check out the cars when Dadβs not there and then leave.β
βIβve been trying to send out feelers here and there about Formula racing and maybe racing for another team.β
βDoes Dad know this?β
Caleb shook his head. βNope. And donβt tell him either.β
βJoan said youβre dating a new guy?β
βThatβs old news. Weβve been dating for more than a little over six months.β
βAnd youβve never introduced him to me?β Garrison raised his shoulders and shrugged, and gestured for more information with a wave of his hands. βAnd?β
βI like him.β
βWhatβs his name?β
βSeb.β
βSeb?β
βShort for Sebastian?β
Garrisonβs eyebrows arched. βSebastian?β
βHe doesnβt like to use his middle name, Harry.β
βLast name?β
βRush.β
βOkay. Are we going to do very short answers, now? Iβm your brother. You donβt have to be secretive around me.β
Caleb exhaled. βI know.β
