Hi! Thank you, Addison, for letting me drop by again π [You’re so welcome, and hank you for another wonderful post, Holly!]
Did you know that it’s National Button Day today? Buttons have been around since the 13th century, and they’ve been used both for practicality and as ornaments. My mum has a rather big, green tin jar filled with buttons. It’s scratched and dented and it used to be her mother’s. I never met my biological grandmother, she died years before I was born, but growing up, my siblings and I always knew it was her jar.
She used to sew a lot, so there were a lot of buttons in that jar, and as a kid, I loved looking through them. There is something about buttons.
I’ve written a story called How to Soothe a Dragon to celebrate National Button Day. It’s not nearly as nostalgic as a dented tin jar of childhood memories, though.
I believed I was writing sci-fi – it has aliens – but it’s paranormal romance. It has dragon shifters and fated mates, so way more paranormal than sci-fi π
Generations ago, an alien race called Pacurians moved to Earth. They’re big and strong, and they can control minds. They have all the top positions in society, and humans have to struggle to get by.
Derek is one of those struggling humans. He’s special, though. The Pacurians can’t control his mind – they try, which result in pressure building behind his eyes, and if it’s really bad, he gets a nosebleed, but he is still free to make his own decisions. It isn’t of much use since every other human is under the Pacurians’ influence.
It sounds like a dark story, but it isn’t, not really. We have badass aliens, but they wear uniforms similar to those The Beatles wear on the Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band cover, and they’re allergic to lemons. The being allergic to lemons part isn’t widely known, though.
Pacurians always wear their uniforms, and what colour they wear depends on what occupation they have.
Derek’s neighbour, Ocren, is wearing a black uniform which means he works in law enforcement. Derek does his best to avoid Ocren, but one day when he comes home, he finds a black button on his living room floor. He assumes it’s Ocren’s since he’s wearing black and is always chasing after Derek.
Ocren lives in the apartment directly underneath Derek, and there is a fire escape outside their windows, so he believes Ocren has broken in through his window, and while squeezing through, a button has come loose.
So, Derek does what any sane person would *snort* He grabs a lemon, cuts it in half, and climbs out on the fire escape to confront Ocren about the button.

Excerpt
Ocren did his best to stand still. Derek had come to him. Heβd thrown a lemon into his apartment, and it burned his nose to breathe in the scent of it, but heβd come.
βYou canβt tell me youβre not allowed to talk about lemons.β
They werenβt allowed to talk about lemons. They werenβt allowed to talk about mind control, though since Derek had reacted the way he did when heβd given him a mental push, he suspected he was aware.
βOcren?β
He pronounced it wrong, stressed the last syllable instead of the first, but Ocren liked it. βYes?β
βThereβs a lemon in your apartment.β
βI know.β Heβd have to leave. The burning in his throat grew stronger and his eyes threatened to tear up.
βAre you gonna hand it back to me?β
Ocren shook his head, he didnβt turn in the direction of the apartment, as long as he stood in the fresh air by the window, it wasnβt too bad, but if he walked closer, heβd start to cough.
βI want it back.β
βThen go get it.β He gestured for him to climb in through the window.
Derek narrowed his eyes. βIf I go in there, what will you do?β
Heβd go out on the fire escape. Derek held half a lemon in his hand. Heβd get burns if he touched the juice of it.
βNothing.β
Derek pursed his lips. βThis is the longest weβve spoken without you trying to break something or eat me.β
βIβve never tried to eat you.β He didnβt eat humans. There were rumors about Zatera born feasting on human corpses when in shifted form, but it was all horror stories. No Pacurian, no matter what moon they were born under, ate humans.
Derek huffed. βSeriously, though. This has to stop. I will report you. I know all you have to do is bury the report once you get to work, but I canβt live like this. You were in my apartment.β
βIβve never been in your apartment.β Ocren curled his fingers into fists to prevent claws from ripping through the skin. Being this close to Derek had his control slipping, though not in the way it was slipping when he was away from Derek. He wanted to shift, wanted to curl his tail around Derek and never let him goβexcept, he held a lemon in his hand.
Derek reached into the pocket of his jeans. βThis is your button.β
He held up a black button. Ocren looked down at his chestβall buttons were there. βI have all my buttons.β
βOn that jacket, but it doesnβt mean you arenβt missing one on another.β
He wanted to reach for the button, but Derek had lemon juice on his fingers. Which meant the button most likely had lemon juice on it as well. βIβve never been in your apartment, and Iβm not missing a button.β
Derek grimaced. βCan I ask you something?β
βMaybe.β
βWhatβs with the bracelets?β
Ocren looked down at the maroon stripes around his right wrist. βIt means Iβm dangerous.β
Derek snorted. βRight.β
Ocren nodded.
βYouβre serious?β
With a deep breath, he looked into Derekβs eyes. βTheyβre warnings. Iβm not here because I want to be. I was exiled to Earth, and I live with humans because the others donβt want to be near me.β
Derek laughed. βOh, come on! Youβre expecting me to buy that?β
Ocren flashed sharp teeth, and Derek stopped laughing. As soon as he quieted, Ocren cursed himself. He wanted Derek to laugh, and now heβd scared himβlike he scared everyone.
βOkay.β Derek raised his hands, one holding a button and one holding half a lemon. βI get it. Youβre badass. It still doesnβt give you the right to break into my apartment, andββ
Ocren snarled. βI havenβt been in your apartment!β
Derek jumped up a step, his fair skin turning pale. βStay away from me.β He jogged up the stairs.
Fuck. βDerek! Derek, Iβm sorry.β Ocren climbed out the window which only had Derek running faster. βDerek, please.β
Derek hopped in through his window and shut it with a bang. Ocren stopped outside. βDerek?β
Derek shook his head on the other side of the glass.
βCan you at least take out the lemon?β
Derek raised his eyebrows at him.
βI can stay here, and you can go down the stairs and in through my front door. Itβs unlocked.β
Derek opened the window an inch. βAre you serious?β
βYesβ¦β They werenβt allowed to talk about lemons, and one complaint against him and he was going into isolation. ββ¦but I never told you.β

Blurb
Derek Herman is living a nightmare. Long before he was born, the planet was taken over by a mind-controlling alien race, and everyone is affected except for him. Derek does his best not to draw attention to himself, but itβs not going well.
Ocren Starburst is obsessed with his human neighbor. Every time he sees Derek, he wants nothing more than to grab him, hold him, and keep him forever. And four years of chasing him up the stairs in their apartment building has resulted in Derek refusing to even acknowledge his existence. That is, until Derek accuses Ocren of breaking into his apartment.
Derek found a button on his living room floor, the same kind of button Ocren wears on his police uniform. And while Ocren hasnβt broken in, he knows the button means someone has. Ocrenβs race has kept their shape-shifting abilities secret for years, but now his other form wants out to slaughter everyone that dares to get too close to Derek. And staying in control proves hard when threats toward Derek increase.
Will they be able to keep Derek safe without Ocren losing control of his dragon self?
