I’ve joined the Rainbow Snippets group on Facebook. From their description: “Rainbow Snippets is a group for LGBTQ+ authors, readers, and bloggers to gather once a week to share six sentences from a work of fiction–a WIP or a finished work or even a 6-sentence book recommendation (no spoilers please!).” Pretty cool, eh? Don’t forget to “Like” my Facebook page and/or my Facebook profile while you’re over there checking out this fantastic group!
Snapshots, my collection of short stories, celebrated its 2nd bookversary this past week, so today’s random snippet is from Born to Be Wild, one of the shorts in that collection.
Context for this snippet: Roland will be graduating soon, but his boyfriend, Fisher, is a freshman. Roland has two job offers to consider, one that’ll keep him in his college town, and the other, that would otherwise be a more appealing offer, would take him away.
Roland is the first speaker, Fisher is the other. Told from Roland’s 3rd-person POV:
“Things are different than they were back in September. Saint Vincent would be okay, too, and I think I’d like surgical floor work.”
“You would?”
“I guess—well, yeah. I guess I was wondering what you thought.”
“It’s your life. You need to decide which job you’d rather have.”
“Shit, Fisher. Quit acting like you don’t know what I’m talking about. Yeah, it’s my life. But my life is about more than just my career path now. I’m willing to make compromises with that…if it’s worth it.”
Fisher stared at him a moment before speaking. “Do you think I’m worth it?”

Born to Be Wild
Roland is always willing to help a neighbor, so when the guys from the fraternity next door ask if he and his gay buddies will play a trick on a new pledge, he happily agrees. When Roland happens to discover that new pledge Fisher is not as uptight as he’s been told, he starts to think maybe the joke is on him. Determined to turn the tables, Roland surprises Fisher with more than he bargained for. Will the plan backfire, or work out just like Roland had planned?

#RainbowSnippets
Aww…such a truthful, sweet admission!
Thank you! 💞
Yes! He does indeed, without a shadow of a doubt, like you are worth it.
💞 Knowing me, Roland probably agrees. 😉
Oh man, all the feels in this snip.
💞 Thank you!
Sometimes it takes a bit of a reality check for us to see our own worth. Self-doubt is a crippler. I hope they figure this out.
Too true. I hope so, too! 😉
So much emotion in this snippet!
Thank you! <3
I suspect the answer is yes he’s worth it
Ha. I don’t suppose it would really be much of a spoiler to agree. 😏
Loaded question there…yikes! He can always change jobs later.
Ha! Good point. ❤️
Aw, I love this … tentatively seeing if they’re both on the same page… heart-melt!
Thank you! 💞
