#TREADMILL Week 143 & What I #AmReading – The Doctor’s Orders by Heidi Cullinan

Treadmill Goals/Tracking

  • Get on the treadmill (or equivalent exercise) daily
  • Pace is fine at 30 min/mile, although I may up it on occasion
  • Time range between 30 minutes and 1 hour per day
  • Distance 1-2 miles per day
  • Read the chosen book, which I won’t allow myself to read outside of my treadmill time, hopefully motivating me to reach or exceed the above goals (exception…at the end of the week where a book is highlighted, I will finish it off-treadmill so I can feature something new the next week)

What I’m Reading

Note: Although I will try to avoid them, my weekly reading snippets may or may not contain spoilers, so read at your own risk.

What I #amreading: The Doctor’s Orders by Heidi Cullinan (Copper Point Medical #3)

(Side note: This is the 2nd ARC I’ve scored for my not-a-reviews 😁🎉)

Once upon a time Nicholas Beckert was the boy who stole kisses from Jared Kumpel beneath the bleachers. Now Jared’s a pediatrician and Nick is the hospital CEO who won’t glance his way. But everything changes when they’re stranded alone in a hospital elevator. Ten years of cold shoulders melt away, and old passions rekindle into hot flames. Once out of the elevator, Jared has no intention of letting Nick get away. He wants a full, open relationship, which is a step further than Nick is willing to go, and it looks like the same arguments that drove them apart in high school might resurface. Jared’s determined not to let it happen again. He won’t order Nick from his shell—he’ll listen to what he needs to feel safe. Maybe this time he can prescribe his lover a happily ever after.

My favorite lines this week…

✿✿ SUNDAY ✿✿

Nick tugged at the cuffs of his shirt and glanced away. “I should….”

“Of course.” Jared’s voice was flat, dead, as if he couldn’t wait to get away. “I’m sorry to keep you.”

And just like that, they parted, Jared wafting over to the bar, Nick resuming his trajectory toward the Ryans, plastering on the expression he’d practiced in the mirror as the leaden weight settled all the more deeply onto his heart.

✿✿ MONDAY ✿✿

The women…? What women? Nick frowned at Jared. “You’ve been drinking too much.”

Jared laughed. “You’re kidding me. You’re so gay you can’t tell when a horde of women are hitting on you? All they’ve done all night is try to climb you like you’re a tree, or unwrap you like a Big Mac.”

✿✿ TUESDAY ✿✿ (For context, they’re trapped in an elevator here…)

The silence went on a little too long. Nick couldn’t help glancing around, despite the fact that this was a fruitless endeavor. Talk about something else. Anything else. “Now I really wish I’d taken a piss before I got in here.”

She had tears in her eyes as she patted his cheeks. “Look at my boy. You’re barely out of your own situation and you’re trying to protect other people. Just like your father.”

His chest swelled with pride, but it also pinched on a bittersweet ache.

It had been a long time since Jared had one of those goofy grins that stretched his face, the ones you couldn’t wipe away.

✿✿ FRIDAY ✿✿

Jared managed to keep his hands at his sides and not slide them up Nick’s crisp shirt and draw him to his lips by his tie. His eyes were rich and full of expression—light and playful, but they hinted at his intelligence, too. “Well, so you know, your visit is already a point of gossip. I did my best to stop it, but I can only do so much. Unless you changed your mind about this relationship being public?”

Nick stared at Jared, the ominous lead boot floating over him now crashing down into the bottom of his stomach.

Just as quickly as it fell, Jared whisked it away with a soft smile and a kiss, a sweet brush across Nick’s lips that lingered and made Nick yearn all the way to his toes.

    1. 🤣 Tuesday. I’m a grade-schooler at heart who will always laugh first at anything even remotely resembling potty-humor.
