TREADMILL Self-Challenge & What I #AmReading – Dine with Me by Layla Reyne

Treadmill Goals/Tracking

  • Get on the treadmill (or equivalent exercise) daily
  • Pace is fine at 30 min/mile, although I may up it on occasion
  • Time range between 30 minutes and 1 hour per day
  • Distance 1-2 miles per day
  • Read the chosen book, which I won’t allow myself to read outside of my treadmill time, hopefully motivating me to reach or exceed the above goals (exception…at the end of the week where a book is highlighted, I will finish it off-treadmill so I can feature something new the next week)

What I #amreading: Dine with Me by Layla Reyne

Life never tasted so good.

Miller Sykes’s meteoric rise to award-winning chef is the stuff of culinary dreams, but it’s all crashing down around him. He’s been given a diagnosis that could cost him something even more precious than his life: his sense of taste. Rather than risk the very thing that defines him, Miller embarks on a last tour of his favorite meals while he still can.

But there’s a catch: he needs a financial backer to make it happen, and he doesn’t want anyone to know he’s sick.

Dr. Clancy Rhodes has two weeks to come to terms with putting aside oncology to work at his father’s thriving plastic surgery practice. When the opportunity to travel with a Michelin-starred chef presents itself, the foodie in him can’t believe it. It doesn’t hurt that Miller’s rugged good looks are exactly Clancy’s cup of joe.

As Clancy and Miller travel from coast to coast and indulge in everything from dive bars to the most decadent of culinary experiences, they’re suddenly sharing a lot more than delicious meals. Sparks fly as they bond over their love of flavors and the pressures of great expectations. But when Miller’s health takes a turn for the worse, Clancy must convince him he’s more—so much more—than just his taste buds. And that together, they can win a battle that once seemed hopeless.

My favorite lines this week…

✿✿ SUNDAY ✿✿ (Mowed…no reading…sorry, but 12 chapters at 2 per day worked perfectly for 6 days anyway.)

✿✿ MONDAY ✿✿

Stunning.

There was no other word to describe the young man shoving his way through the group of cellar rats in Santa hats at the far end of the bar. Well, except maybe also tired. His black-rimmed glasses were drifting down his nose, his mop of brown hair was tousled, and his broad shoulders, snug in a corduroy blazer, were slightly slumped. But the weariness in his tall, trim frame didn’t detract from the overall package.

✿✿ TUESDAY ✿✿

Miller mimicked taking his photograph. “Clancy Rhodes, cover model.”

“Don’t judge. It’s a travel day.” He ducked his chin and peered over the top of his sunglasses. “How much plaid do you own?”

✿✿ WEDNESDAY ✿✿

“Never be sorry for being in love and for being happy. None of you, you hear me” Miller cupped his friend’s beautiful tear-streaked face, brushing away the wetness with his thumbs. Miller admired that openness, loved him all the harder for it. “Thank you, for always being there for me. For bringing all that is you into my life. I couldn’t have asked for a better friend.” He leaned forward and lowered his voice for Greg’s ear’s only. “I’m sorry I can’t be a better friend for you now. That I won’t be there to see you get all the love and happiness you deserve.” He dropped a kiss on Greg’s forehead then turned, bolting for the restaurant exit before either man could see the pain and regret in his own eyes.

✿✿ THURSDAY ✿✿

He shot out an arm and swept it across the hotel room’s marble vanity. Plastic bottles and industrial strength glass hit the carpeted floor with a muffled thump. Wholly unsatisfying, as was the string of “fucks” Miller let loose.

✿✿ FRIDAY ✿✿

Didn’t matter. Miller’s chest ached all the same, Clancy’s laughter like a warm blanket full of hidden knives. Was it luck or a curse that’d brought this wonderful man to him now, when he had so little time left?

As if sensing the attention, Clancy shifted his gaze toward their balcony. His sparkling green eyes locked on Miller, and he smiled, wide and bright.

Miller had his answer. He was the luckiest man alive, at least for tonight.

✿✿ SATURDAY ✿✿

Clancy didn’t think. He ran, barreling into Miller. He considered, belatedly, that the collision of the bodies may have been too hard, that Miller could still be sore from last week, and he began to pull back. Miller’s big arms wrapped around him, holding him close, and a chuffed breath ruffled his hair. Clancy inhaled and sank deeper into Miller’s embrace. “I missed you.”
